Welcome to the Beyond the Gates Daily Y.A.P.P. (Your After-Program Ponderings) for a quick — and by that, I mean you’re already halfway done — recap of the most amazing or what-the-heck-did-we-just-watch moments on today’s episode. Let’s get to it:
What Happened on Beyond the Gates

Karaoke night hit Uptown as the Dupree family landed. The guise of having the night be a way of cheering up and supporting Dani Dupree was looking good, and Anita had no idea that she was about to be ambushed by the entire clan and bullied into getting up on stage. Okay, maybe not bullied, but these peer pressuring family members took absolutely no notice of the fear-ridden expression on Anita’s face. Naomi and Dani had gone to the stage and started some resurrection of a song probably best left in the decade that it died in and paused to let the whole club know that they were missing something/someone and that someone was now frozen to her chair like she was playing that childhood game of stuck in the mud. Anita tried to tell Vernon that she was not ready nor warmed up like the Anita Dupree of old that would take the stage and shine, and she didn't know if that version of Anita still existed. Minor points, apparently. Vernon, using every bit of his persuasiveness from his days of being a Senator, got her on the stage. Anita promised not to forgive the two who started this, and took a beat or two to get in character. But there she was, Anita flamin' Dupree, legend, singer, matriarch, and all-around good sport. She wowed the crowd and thank goodness it was her singing as the backup vocalists were… ambitiously best in the back. It’s not that it was a bad performance (they are a talented bunch for real), but it couldn't have been cheesier than if Vernon joined them doing the buffalo shuffle while clinging to a bottle of Tide.
