The Daily Y.A.P.P For Beyond the Gates, April 17th: Tyrell stands firm

Welcome to the Beyond the Gates Daily Y.A.P.P. (Your After-Program Ponderings) for a quick — and by that, I mean you’re already halfway done — recap of the most amazing or what-the-heck-did-we-just-watch moments on today’s episode. Let’s get to it:

What Happened on Beyond the Gates

The Parenting duo of Martin and Smitty appear to have made things worse for poor Tyrell, the bullying at the school escalated after a special assembly that all students had to attend (except his sister Samantha…more on that another time). Tyrell confronted his parents and went off at Martin for speaking to the principal. Tyrell claimed Martin had no idea what this felt like, and what it was like in the halls at school. History lesson time for Tyrell. Martin led with, “You think you’re the first person to have been ostracized at school?, try being a gay Dupree and trying to connect with other kids in DC.” Martin went on to say that he had been stamped as different from day one. Knowing his dad had been through the same kind of struggles and had made it through must have resonated, but at the same time it just added weight to what Tyrell had been saying all along. “Just let me handle it,”has been his mantra. We got to see this have a happy outcome though, as the popular girl at school has dumped the jock of a boyfriend that beat on Tyrell. Jessica, now single, caught up with Tyrell at Ophy Genes and the two happily flirted. Tyrell upon arriving back home grinning madly told his parents that their new idea of moving him to another school wasn't necessary. Duprees don't run said Tyrell, Martin and Smitty smiled, parenting done right. The three shared a hug and gave us another great Beyond the Gates moment.
