Beyond the Gates' Jacob and Naomi may soon have very difficult decisions to make regarding both their personal as well as professional lives. Fairmont Crest has had its fair share of surprises in its first month – Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) and Hayley's (Marquita Goings) wedding, Dani's (Karla Mosley) many mishaps with Bill and Hayley, Ted's (Maurice Johnson) scandalous affair that will rock Fairmont Crest, Doug (Jason Graham) and Vanessa's (Lauren Buglioli)…interesting marriage, Doug’s gambling addiction, the love triangles of Kat (Colby Muhammad), Eva (Ambyr Michelle), and Tomas (Alex Alegria), as well as Andre (Sean Freeman), Derek (Ben Gavin), and Ashley (Jen Jacob).

However, surprises and betrayals that involve family just hit different, so the news that Naomi is taking on the case against Bill’s law firm hitting at the same time that we find out about chief-of-police Elon (Malachi Malik)'s tie-ins with Marcel (Darryl W. Handy) and Joey (Jon Lindstrom) spells for the hottest of tea being served when all is said and done.

Beyond the Gates – Not like father, like son. And, daughter

Naomi has expressed her deep frustration with her father, Bill, following the news of his affair with her former best friend Hayley and their equally treacherous choices of getting married, sending wedding invitations to all of Fairmont Crest, having the wedding at the county club, and, finally, moving to Fairmont Crest. Naomi was most likely about ready to join her mother, Dani, as she shot up the wedding. Naomi stated to Bill in no uncertain terms that, as far as she is concerned, her father is dead. With that, she planned to never speak to him again. However, she was then approached by three women with accusations of sexual misconduct for Bill’s law firm. Hesitant at first, Naomi decides to take the case. She even shows up to Bill's firm to deliver the news. Can this rookie take on her former-hero-turned enemy and father? Or will this case and her impending loss spell ruin for her own law firm?

On the flip side, we have rookie cop Jacob, who is a by-the-books kind of guy. He is paired with veteran cop, Marcel, and they take part in a stake-out where they witness local entrepreneur, Joey, exchanging cash with an unidentifed person. Marcel has to talk Jacob out of leaping at the chance to catch Joey in the act, citing the dangers of rushing onto a scene without backup or knowing what awaits him. This is, of course, the reason he gives Jacob. As we find out, the real reason is that Marcel is working for Joey and doesn’t want his bread and butter to run out. Furthermore, we see Elon warn Marcel to be more kind to Jacob and also not to raise any kind of suspicion as he doesn’t want Jacob asking him questions about Marcel that he “can’t answer.” Does this mean what we would think it means? Is Elon also in cahoots with Joey? A crooked police chief? Will Jacob’s first big case be taking down his own father, and is he up for the task?

Hearts Under Arrest

The toll these jobs will take on Naomi and Jacob’s careers is an understatement. If won, they could set a precedent for both of their careers – putting what’s right first, even when it comes to family. They could both make great names for themselves as beacons of hope and justice. However, they could also break their careers before they’ve even truly begun. If Naomi loses the case against Bill, her firm could be done for. We’ve seen bits and pieces of Bill’s tenacity, but just how low can or will he go in order to win? Alternatively, if Jacob can’t take down the afoot operation with Joey, Marcel, Elon, and who knows who else, his career (and even life) could be over. With all of that in mind, the emotional toll on Jacob and Naomi could be astronomical. Even if Naomi absolutely abhors Bill and all that he stands for, he is still her father. Jacob even finding out about his father’s involvement in criminal activity with Joey is surely enough to break his heart and make him question all that he’s ever stood for or believed in. Could this also affect their marriage? When Jacob had to arrest Dani following her "gun show" at Bill and Hayley's wedding, there was a strain in the relationship. Is “justice” worth risking literally everything? How will these events unfold? In time, all will be revealed.
