On Beyond the Gates, Andre tried to get candid footage of Garland Memorial's nurses, but they noticed him, stopped what they were doing, and dissipated. Andre questioned Ted's faith in him because, as a photographer, Andre had never produced a documentary before. When Andre couldn't understand why nurses who had been so enthusiastic to sit down for his camera were suddenly avoiding him, Ted likened the change to the practitioners not knowing what they could say because of hospital politics and patient confidentiality. Ted reminded Andre how tenacious he had been getting a wildlife photo in the Congo and suggested applying that tenacity to his fledgling endeavor. Afterwards, Andre managed to get a shot of nurses talking about how irascible a name-calling patient had been.

As Laura was about to be released from the hospital, a Dr. Flannery reported that she'd suffered no permanent damage from her myocardial infarction — but added that there had been a complication. Laura had had an abnormally high level of potassium in her system after the “episode,” but a follow-up test showed the levels as normal. Flannery went on to say that Laura had an infection that had most likely developed from a compromised immune system “after the cardiac arrest.” The visiting Mona couldn't understand how a girl as healthy as Laura could suddenly have a heart attack, and Laura was upset that she'd have to stay in the hospital “for the foreseeable future.”

Dr. Flannery pulled Ashley aside with the observation that she had incorrectly recorded a dosage of medication on Laura's chart. Ashley was already dismayed by her error, but she became horrified when she saw that Andre had recorded the reprimand. If Andre cared for her, the nurse exhorted, he would delete the footage that moment. Andre saw it from the angle of Ashley taking responsibility for a mistake and got her to share her feelings with the camera — she wanted to be competent despite just starting out.

Andre didn't see Derek coming in when he asked Ashley to talk about what it had been like caring for someone she knew, even though she and Derek had broached the subject on camera before — had Andre gotten the whole story? Looking at Derek, Ashley lauded him for how brave he was and for his desire to save people, but she broke down when she realized she hadn't been honest with him about how afraid she'd been that he'd end up in the hospital because of it. That day, she said, still eyeing Derek with Andre, unaware he was there, had been a nightmare come true.

Later, Derek confessed that, while he and Ashley had discussed his career before, he had never seen her become that emotional about it. Ashley conceded she had bottled up the depths of her trepidations and felt better for having released them. As Andre listened, Ashley told Derek that her heart was stronger because he was in it. They concurred that they would never ask each other to give up their careers where lives were on the line, as those careers were part of who they were.

Leslie, in her nurse's costume and most recent wig, waited for her moment and stealthily looked Laura up on the nurse's station computer — but was caught by Shanice. She introduced herself as “Lulu Lenhart” and lied that she had been one of the attending nurses after Laura had had her accident. Shanice bought it and told “Lulu” about Laura's infection, elaborating that Laura would be laid up for another few weeks. When Shanice stopped “Lulu” from leaving and wanted to confirm when she had transferred in, Leslie wriggled out of it and smiled, saying that she'd be keeping an eye on the supervisor.

Chelsea stopped by to see Samantha as Martin and Smitty scooted out for brunch. Samantha was still stunned that she'd modeled in Chelsea's fashion show the previous evening, because “stuff like that never happens to girls like me”; Samantha was equally floored by the stills of her that Chelsea had brought. Chelsea spoke of the demanding schedule involved with being a model and was glad she could focus her attention on building her business with Kat.

Chelsea saw that Samantha had become less enamored with the photos and remarked that one could be on the cover of Essence with everyone praising one's appearance but still get stressed over a pimple that had been airbrushed out. Chelsea recommended that the best course of action was to work with what one had and cited the example of a fellow model who used make-up trickery to detract from her eyes being different sizes. When Samantha inquired, Chelsea admitted that she'd miss some of the people she modeled with and the thrill of being on the runway, but she planned to channel that energy into her new venture.

Samantha wanted to know how a model started out; Chelsea said that it was more than just getting paid to look pretty. One had to be unforgettable and invisible at the same time, Chelsea imparted, because the attention had to be on the product being showcased. But a model also had to be comfortable in their own skin to be able to handle the constant criticism coming from all sides. Chelsea told the story of a contemporary of hers who had had to be hospitalized after developing an eating disorder. Samantha felt that Chelsea was lucky to have had Dani for guidance. Chelsea offered to be there to lend support to Samantha but was shocked when Samantha announced that she wanted to be a model – and have Chelsea as her manager.

Chelsea was stunned that Samantha was still excited about the prospect of modeling after having heard about some of the difficulties that came with that vocation. Samantha promised to take care of her body, stay in school, and keep her grades up; Chelsea couldn't believe she was even considering Samantha's request, given Smitty and Martin would never let Samantha go into modeling. Samantha was ready to fight and asked what Chelsea had had to do to convince her parents. Chelsea related that Dani had made all the decisions and taken over her life from the beginning. Samantha was overjoyed when Chelsea agreed to be Samantha's manager if Samantha's parents greenlit her – Chelsea cautioned that Samantha's future as a model would go forward, or not, depending on what her parents said.

At Uptown, Martin presented Smitty with a favorite fountain pen of Smitty's that had needed ink; Martin had gotten it filled, the same way Smitty had filled Martin's life. Smitty recalled that the instrument was Martin's first tangible compliment of his writing, received when Martin had first asked for Smitty's phone number. The marrieds recalled how flirtatious their banter leading to their first date had been, and Martin wanted Smitty to know that he didn't take his husband for granted.

Smitty was sad to realize that Samantha and Tyrell would be leaving home soon. The proud parents marveled at how amazing the teens were, with Martin adding that they had been able to give them happy memories; he and Smitty would always have a home for them. Smitty declared that Martin was his home.

Samantha came upon Tyrell counting the memes made from his inadvertent underwear photo. Tyrell accounted the mean texts and notes in his locker that he'd had to contend with. Samantha gleefully proclaimed that they wouldn't have to deal with their school any longer – she was becoming a model and taking Tyrell with her. She had been in heaven walking down the runway; Tyrell was sure Samantha would end up in heaven when she shared her plans with their pop and dad. Samantha wanted Tyrell's help in flipping the script on them.

Martin and Smitty became suspicious when they arrived to find their home clean because of Samantha. Tyrell stepped up and suddenly admitted that Samantha had been covering for him in regard to his bike accident story. He wanted to speak to Martin privately. As they went into the other room, Smitty dismissed Samantha's attempts at flattery and could tell the kids were playing a divide-and-conquer game. Samantha reminded Smitty how she had been repeatedly told that when she discovered her passion, she should follow it...now she had discovered that modeling was her passion, and no one was going to stand in her way.

Nicole noticed the security camera Kat had promised to get rid of still strategically placed in her office and took Kat to task for it while a pleased Eva listened outside the door. Kat insisted that she didn't trust Eva and reminded Nicole that she had witnessed Eva going through her files; Nicole rebutted that that was part of Eva's job. Nicole understood that Kat missed Laura and also reassured Kat that Kat herself wasn't being replaced. As Kat left Nicole's office, Eva pretended she was just coming in; the two were silent as they passed each other.

Kat told Tomás how her and Chelsea's website traffic had blown up because of their purse's place in the fashion show. Kat lamented that, because of now having orders to fulfill, she'd have less time for Tomás, who agreed that they'd simply have to make sure their schedules were free for each other. Kat hoped Tomás would have a certain night open the following week, though she was hesitant to admit it was because she was having a birthday party and wanted him to attend. Tomás asked if Vernon would be there; Kat promised to protect him and mused that Tomás's presence would give her an excuse to leave early if necessary, which intrigued Tomás; he promised her an improvised Maryland version of a “Puerto Rico goodbye.”

Chelsea met Kat at Uptown, upset that Samantha wanted to be a model because they'd given her the one shot at the fashion show; Chelsea explained how her trying to warn Samantha off the profession hadn't worked and wondered why Kat wasn't also freaking out about the development. Kat thought that at least Chelsea's experience would help Samantha know what to look out for – and help Chelsea design a safe career for their cousin.

Tomás saw a sullen Eva at Orphey Gene's and encouraged her to open up to him. Eva was glad that Laura's recovery was almost complete, but bummed because it meant she'd be out of a job. Eva had enjoyed being treated like family by the Richardsons and didn't relish being back to figuring out what she was supposed to do with her life. Eva pivoted to Tomás's job; Tomás laid out how he was bringing a client a piece of cake from the diner to soften the bad news he had to deliver about their case. Eva snarked that she would take Tomás's advice – the next time Kat came at her, she would shove a piece of cake down Kat's throat.

Eva heard Nicole and Ted talking about Laura's infection when they returned to the office. The Richardsons decided that when Laura finally was cleared to come back to work, they could help set Eva up as a hairstylist at the country club. Eva didn't seem pleased.

Leslie was excited when Eva came home talking about Nicole and Ted having plans for her once Laura resumed her old job, but Eva groused at the idea of being a hairstylist again. It troubled Eva when Leslie spoke of Laura still being in the hospital as an opportunity; Leslie laughed it off when Eva returned to asking if Leslie had had anything to do with Laura's condition. Eva looked doubtful.
