On Beyond the Gates, Nicole told Dani that she'd heard Chelsea's news about quitting modeling. “You came over to watch me fall apart?” Dani sassed, wiping away tears. Dani described herself as a good faker when Nicole relayed how Chelsea had said Dani had been supportive. Nicole praised her sister as a good mom, and Dani granted that it was hard to let Chelsea go. Nicole saw the cracked frame surrounding Dani's magazine cover; Dani acknowledged that she hadn't broken it in a rage – someone else had, but Dani didn't mention who. Dani said the frame was like her life: broken and jagged. Nicole offered to help Dani put that life back together.

When Dani revealed that she often thought of what her life would have been like had she not met Bill, Nicole beseeched her sister to move on. She could see that Dani was codependent, and it came with withdrawal symptoms, just like a substance addiction. Dani couldn't deny that she had been codependent and admitted that she had shelved her dreams to focus on Bill's. Nicole derided Bill for using Dani until he had no more need for her and replacing her with a younger model. Nicole encouraged Dani to meet some decent men because surely she'd find one who would love to be with her.

Dani divulged that she was getting her needs met, but also that she was not ready to date. “Then maybe you should date yourself,” Nicole suggested – meaning, Dani should take the time to figure out what made her happy. “And who is this Dani you see in your magic Nicole ball?” Dani wanted to know. Was it the woman crying over an old magazine cover, the one who shot up a wedding? Nicole more likened her to the woman who had gracefully presided over her gala. But Dani couldn't help wanting Bill, even though she knew he was the scum of the earth. Loving Bill was all she had ever known.

Nicole validated Dani's feelings but hinted that exploring them could open the door to change. “You sound like such a psychiatrist right now!” Dani cringed. Nicole went with it and initiated a role-playing exercise with Dani, with Nicole functioning as Dani's “date.” “What are you drinking?” Nicole-as-date asked. “Vodka and sadness,” Dani replied cheekily, pretending to throw her drink in “his” face. “I see we have our work cut out for us,” Nicole deadpanned.

Shifting gears, Nicole asked: Did Dani really still love Bill, or did Dani just want him back because she couldn't have him? Dani balked; Nicole said she had seen Dani go after things just to get them before. Nicole wondered if Dani really could go back to Bill after how badly he had treated her. When she thought of Bill, Dani owned up, and she didn't think of the bad times. Nicole reminded Dani how Bill had cheated on her and flaunted his mistress-turned-wife in her face, but Dani vowed she would still take Bill back in a heartbeat. Dani agreed with Nicole that she was an addict and feared she would never get over Bill. This fact made both sisters sad, and they hugged.

At Uptown, Hayley demanded to know what Naomi was doing, filing a lawsuit against Bill. Naturally, Hayley had heard about it — she was Bill's wife. “Don't you ever get tired of bragging about that?” Naomi spat. When Hayley pointed out that the suit would affect her as well, since Hayley worked at Bill's firm, Naomi was even more convinced that Hayley getting her promotion after another woman was fired – and while sleeping with the boss – made it even more of a harassment-filled work environment. Hayley protested that she had earned her promotion. “On your back?” Naomi shot back.

Undeterred, Hayley accused Naomi of setting her co-workers up to be collateral damage just to get back at Bill. Hayley insisted that Naomi's clients were just looking for a payout. “I really don't like women who down support other women,” Naomi hurled at Hayley. The new Mrs. Hamilton had never had a problem with Mike, but Naomi said the issue wasn't Hayley's experience – it was her clients'. Hayley reminded Naomi that, as her former best friend, she knew Naomi, and her observation was that Naomi's anger at Bill was clouding Naomi's judgement.

Hayley confessed that she had always thought of Naomi as a sister and wished Naomi was still in her life. Naomi was more concerned about Chelsea, her own sister, who had been hurt by the breakup of their parents' marriage; Naomi scornfully deemed her friendship with Hayley an illusion. Hayley had not only betrayed Naomi's mother, but Naomi, and for that, Naomi was more angry with Hayley than with Bill. Hayley might have fallen in love with Bill, Naomi granted, but she could have done the right thing – Bill had been married. “You coulda kept your drawers on,” Naomi snarked.

Hayley found it petty that Naomi would champion a frivolous lawsuit just to strike back at her father. “I'm just meeting my dad where he is,” Naomi held, “In the sewer...with you.” Hayley warned that Naomi couldn't win. “Don't start nothin', won't be nothin',” she told her ex-friend. Naomi was emphatic that sexual harassment and discrimination wasn't nothing. Hayley promised that, after Naomi lost, Bill's firm would sue Naomi's and put Naomi out of business.

Naomi wasn't moved by Hayley's threats and maintained that the law was on her side since sexual harassment was illegal. Her clients had the right to take Mike and the firm to court. Hayley declared that she had come to talk to Naomi out of respect for their prior friendship, but if Naomi stood firm about the lawsuit, the gloves were coming off.. Hayley would support Bill and help take Naomi down. “Bring...it...on,” Naomi dared.

At Orphey Gene's, Smitty claimed to Evan that he and Martin had simply gotten their wires crossed about Evan's offer for Smitty to work at The Washington Record. In fact, instead of not being interested, Smitty's schedule had just opened up. Smitty subtly burned Martin by adding that he'd have to discuss it with Martin first. Evan understood and took his leave; Martin told Smitty he hadn't said anything about the opportunity because he hadn't thought it was right for Smitty. Martin added that he was afraid of losing Smitty to the job like Smitty was afraid of losing Martin to politics. “That is a crock,” Smitty retorted.

Smitty felt that Martin considered reporting beneath being a congressman and took note of Martin's increased secretiveness. Martin apologized and owned his selfishness, promising he wouldn't keep anything from Smitty again. That covered the future, Smitty concurred, but what other secrets did Martin have in the present? Martin replied there were none, and Smitty reiterated that it was not right for Martin to make unilateral decisions about Smitty's career. Smitty thought Martin should know how important journalism was to him, and, while Smitty had willingly given it up to help raise Samantha and Tyrell, he'd thought the break would be temporary.

Martin had seen Smitty as the kids' primary caregiver and confessed that Smitty was better at it. Smitty had put in the time, but he'd always envisioned going back to work once their children were in high school. Martin felt that Smitty provided the family's stability and that his working again would upend it. Smitty countered that Martin running for president would be far more detrimental than Smitty doing most of his work from home, to which Martin agreed...“if it happens.” Smitty took Martin's hand and noted that when Martin wanted something to happen, it did. Martin said they would have to do whatever was necessary to protect the teens — the family had to come first.

Smitty concurred and imparted that he loved journalism because it was one of the true ways to speak truth to power. Smitty enjoyed digging and getting to the truth of a matter – what would Martin do if he ran for president and Smitty was assigned to probe into him? Martin was sure Smitty would be reassigned, owing to the clear conflict of interest. Smitty knew everything there was to know about Martin's past, Martin assured. “Probably,” Smitty smiled. Smitty just didn't want Martin to give him – or anybody else – a reason to start digging.

Martin and Smitty came home to find Samantha on her tablet. When asked where Tyrell was, Samantha hesitated and said he had just gone to bed. Samantha tried to stop her parents from going upstairs to check on her brother, but Tyrell came down and told them not to be mad at her. Smitty and Martin's eyes widened when they saw that Tyrell had a large abrasion on his face.

At the police station, Marcel exchanged angry glances with Elon, then surprised Jacob by bringing him coffee. Jacob determined that Marcel was only being nice because he wanted something. Marcel found Jacob suspicious and reported that he had simply been rough on Jacob to haze him since Jacob was new to the force. Going forward, the newbie would get the “kinder, gentler” Marcel. Jacob didn't buy it, so Marcel reminisced that he used to be a greenhorn just like Jacob, but Jacob corrected him, saying that he was new to their department, not the police force in general.

Marcel got frustrated, caught himself, then tried to impress upon his partner not to look the other way on the job. Like Marcel had with Joey Armstrong? Jacob returned. “Don't be me,” Marcel said mysteriously. “Be better.” Later, Jacob accused Elon of working on Marcel, which Elon denied. Jacob was adamant that he could fight his own battles. “Don't fight this one,” Elon forewarned. Jacob didn't understand; Elon said Jacob didn't have to – Jacob just needed to leave the issue alone, or Elon would assign him a new partner.

Kat called Ted to invite him and Nicole to dinner, as she hadn't been spending much time with her parents. Ted joked about Kat hanging out with her “hopelessly unhip” mom and dad and accepted. After hanging up, Kat planted a security camera in Nicole's office from which to monitor Eva.

Leslie and Eva shared ice cream at the diner, with Eva remembering how extravagant she'd thought the dessert was as a child. Leslie lamented that Eva had been cheated out of what Ted had given his other children and wished she hadn't given in to his demand that she leave town. The order had made Leslie feel cheap, but she was ready to get some bang for her buck in exposing Ted at the Richardsons' anniversary party.

Eva hailed Leslie's devotion as a mother and recalled Leslie's deceased husband, Alan. “What a poor excuse for a stepfather he was!” Leslie laughed. Ms. Thomas admitted that, even when Alan was alive, Eva had been her top priority. Eva felt the same about Leslie, and that was why she had been rethinking their plan. Eva wondered if they should tell Ted that she was his daughter in private; a public exposure would feel good in the short-term, but wouldn't necessarily facilitate their long-term goals. Leslie countered that Ted would be forced to grant Eva her birthright as a result of publicizing his abandonment; there would be no way he could dodge his responsibility. Eva wasn't sure.

Kat e-mailed Eva an instruction – under Nicole's name – to come by the office and ensure that the computer there was logged out of the hospital account. Eva got the message, but Leslie sniffed that Nicole could log out of her own account without making Eva work late. Eva reinforced that she had to be the perfect assistant for their plan to work and left to tend to Nicole's log-out.

Kat monitored her mom's office on her phone from Uptown — then was startled not only to see Hayley in conference with Naomi, but by the appearance of a strange woman named Anna. Not knowing that “Anna” was really Leslie in yet another disguise, Kat flinched upon learning they both knew Eva, who arrived at the Richardson home and admired its fineries. Ted found Eva holding an expensive candlestick, which Eva claimed had been moved out of its spot. Ted again praised the good job Eva had been doing, but Eva remarked that Kat seemed to despise her.

Ted mentioned that Kat didn't open up to outsiders easily and that she was preoccupied between working for him and collaborating with Chelsea. Ted conceded that he and Nicole had spoiled Kat and given her whatever she wanted; she was definitely a daddy's girl.

Unnerved, Kat didn't care to discuss her mother's employee with a stranger. She disagreed with “Anna” that their meeting was destiny, but listened when “Anna” confided that Eva was unhappy working for Nicole because Kat didn't like her. When “Anna” volunteered to be a peacemaker, Kat smirked that it was not Eva's job to be her bestie. “Anna” struggled to hold it together and brought up Eva's “sad childhood,” emphasizing that everyone liked Eva. Kat found Eva unqualified since she had no prior experience working for someone as high profile as Nicole. “Anna” thought that, by helping Eva, Kat would be helping Nicole as well. Asked why she didn't want to, Kat insisted that Eva was the problem, not her.

Eva figured that Kat couldn't relate to her because she wasn't rich. Ted didn't think that made Eva inferior – it made Eva resourceful and driven. Ted sheepishly recalled that he and Nicole hadn't exposed Kat to much outside of Fairmont Crest, prompting Eva to feel like Ted was taking her side. Ted just wanted everybody to chill and offered to talk to Kat about the matter at dinner. Eva worried that Kat would just end up thinking Eva was turning her father against her, so Ted recanted and said, “Friends?” Eva fist-bumped Ted, breathing a sigh of relief after he left. Eva spied a photo of Ted and Nicole and imagined Leslie in Nicole's place. A tear ran down Eva's cheek.

Kat told “Anna” that Eva was too involved in her parents' lives, causing Leslie to inquire further into it. Kat didn't think it was “Anna's" business, but did disclose that Eva had a way of seeing to things that weren't part of her job description. “Anna” attributed that to diligence; Kat asked “Anna” to pass on a message to Eva: stop crossing so many lines. Ted, who walked into the bar, saw the exchange and hid. “Anna” proclaimed it Kat's loss if she was too closed-minded to make nice with Eva. Kat sized “Anna” up as genuine but felt that Eva, who needed to be watched, had put one over on “Anna.” Declaring their conversation over, “Anna” departed — but ran into Ted outside Uptown. “So now you're going after my daughter!” Ted pronounced angrily.
