What You Missed on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, the returned Kat stared at Nicole's plaque admiringly and expressed regret for being out of town for Nicole's award ceremony. Kat wondered if Nicole was going for “dinner at the Grands”; Nicole noticed the table for two Kat had set up and asked if Kat was trying to get rid of her. Kat made jokes but didn't answer. She added that Grandma didn't like her guests to be late. Nicole predicted that Kat would have a lovely night and hoped her daughter would have fun – but not too much fun.
Tomás arrived with wine and said that Eva had let him in. Kat hoped that Evil Eva was on her way out for the night. Kat was dismayed that, as a psychiatrist, Nicole couldn't see through Eva. As Kat poured drinks, Tomás commented that what she had prepared smelled delicious. She replied that her own kitchen was very small, which was why they were at her parents' house. Tomás asked if they were joining them. Kat said they had the place to themselves.
Kat asked what it was like working for her “former Uncle Bill.” Tomás said that his boss would go to the wall for his clients, but that he could be a heartless taskmaster. The latter was what Kat wanted to hear. Tomás admitted that both were true of Bill, but Kat called Bill small-minded and said he shouldn't be trusted. Tomás noted that, despite Kat hating Bill, he had at least done one good deed — he had allowed Tomás to pursue Kat. Ms. Richardson was surprised to hear that Bill and Tomás had discussed her. Tomás admitted that he had only told Bill that he liked Kat...muchísimo. Kat smiled gleefully.
Tomás raved over the meal, but Kat had a confession: her parents had cooked it. Tomás jested that he'd thought Kat was going to say, “You don't hate Bill Hamilton, so I poisoned the chicken.” When Kat followed that would mean it was their first and last date, Tomás asked if their evening was indeed one. Kat supposed it was, as their dinner and drinks had been tinged with “a hint of chemistry.” They agreed a date wouldn't be complete without a kiss and shared their first one.
When Tomás asked if Kat's bed was as small as her kitchen, Kat put off taking things further for the night. Tomás asked if that meant there'd be a next time. Kat said that his chances for a second date were very good. It was just that...she was a virgin. Tomás found it incredible. “I'm not a unicorn or anything,” Kat demurred. She opined that she just hadn't found the right guy to share that part of herself with yet, and asked if Tomás was disappointed, as other guys she'd dated had been. Tomás said he'd gotten to spend the evening with a rare and inspiring woman and wasn't the least bit put off. They clinked their wine glasses.
At the hospital, Ashley helped Derek back into his room and into bed. Derek claimed he was better and figured Ashley just wanted to keep him around, asking if she'd like to be his night nurse. Ashley and Derek kissed. Andre stopped by and told Derek that a newspaper wanted to do a piece on Derek's rescue. Derek didn't want to do it, but tacitly allowed Andre to take pictures of him upon Ashley's encouragement. Collecting a slew of uninspired images of the firefighter, Andre coached Derek to think about the people he had helped. Ashley volunteered to get out of frame, but Andre said the pictures were better with her in it, leading Derek to hold Ashley as close as possible for the poses.
After Andre left, Derek asked Ashley to massage his temples. She thought it was wonderful that Andre had gotten Derek's story in the paper, but Derek sullenly replied, “If you say so.” When Ashley asked what he meant, he deflected by saying he didn't remember being disapproving because of his concussion. They were interrupted by a lady, Lucille, who had come looking for Derek; she wished to thank Derek for saving her cat, which she'd brought to Derek's room. Derek wrote off his heroism, but Lucille said his actions were the bravest she'd ever seen.
Lucille became emotional describing how Derek had rushed in with seconds to spare before the roof collapsed just to rescue her beloved kitty. “When you saved him, you saved me,” Lucille proclaimed as Derek again minimized his valor. Ashley was less than thrilled to learn that Derek had known the imminent danger he was putting himself in. “I can explain,” Derek replied sheepishly after Lucille exited.
Anita reveled in getting to relax with Vernon...“until one of our children or grandchildren disrupts things,” Anita winked as Dani entered the house. Dani remarked that whatever Rowena was cooking smelled wonderful, but said that she couldn't stay because she had business to attend to. The Duprees and the arriving Nicole wanted details; Dani wanted to keep mum so she didn't jinx things. Nicole looked past Dani's deflections and wanted to know if Dani's “business” had to do with the honeymooning Bill and Hayley. She pointed out that Naomi had told Nicole about Dani looking at her ex's vacation snaps. Dani was annoyed that her daughter had finked but said her plans had nothing to do with the “Shamiltons.”
Appraising her dubious family, Dani revealed that she was about to close a deal with a hot designer for Chelsea's fashion show, whom she had to meet for drinks. On her way out, Dani told Nicole to pass on her compliments to Andre about his tribute video. “He has a gift,” Dani noted slyly as she left. Nicole told her parents that, after Dani had stalked Bill on social media, she had doubts about Dani's “business meeting.” Vernon wryly said that Dani might still be carrying a torch for Bill, but at least she wasn't carrying a gun anymore. Nicole got a text from a patient and had to leave, inspiring amorousness in Vernon once he was alone with his wife. “You've got more life and love in you than any man half your age,” Anita beamed.
Nicole saw Andre sorting through his photos at the hospital and wanted to have a peek herself, but he didn't want his aunt to see that he'd been gazing at Ashley on his camera's monitor; he managed to navigate to a photo of Nicole and Ted at the gala instead. Dr. Richardson asked Andre to coordinate with Eva about getting the full file of gala pics. When Andre shared his observation that Eva had promise, Nicole asked him to please not seduce her assistant. Andre assured his aunt that Eva was just a friend...because his interest lay elsewhere.
Derek admitted that he hadn't gotten clearance from his captain before charging into the building. “If I wait for approval, someone could die,” Derek said adamantly. It was his job. Ashley asserted that Derek could have gotten himself killed and challenged him as to why he'd take such a risk when he usually didn't. Ashley could tell something had been bothering Derek and felt he'd been acting weird. Derek quipped that if he needed a shrink, he'd call Dr. Nicole. He just wanted Ashley to be his girl. Ashley brought the subject back around to Andre and the newspaper piece, but before she could have Derek elaborate, her phone buzzed, and she had to go. Ashley promised to check on Derek later, but her look said she was still perturbed.
Andre felt Nicole had the wrong idea about how deep his feelings could go. “A lothario with a heart of gold?” Nicole sassed. Nicole departed and Ashley passed by, asking Andre if she could see the video he had done for Nicole's ceremony. They put in earbuds to watch it together.
Afterward, Ashley returned to Derek's hospital room and announced she had something to tell him: she was in love with Andre and they were moving in together! They were getting a cat and calling it “Derek.” Derek watched in horror as they kissed — but then Derek woke up from his bad dream.
Ashley told Andre that his video was amazing. “You're amazing,” Andre replied breathlessly before leaning in toward the nurse. Ashley leaned back, asking, “Were you about to kiss me?”
Dani brought a gift to the Hamiltons' doorstep, only to be startled by someone grabbing her shoulder. It was George, a Fairmont Crest security guard doing his rounds. Dani held up the wrapped present she had for Bill and Hayley, having to answer for herself when George hesitantly brought up Dani firing bullets at the Hamiltons' wedding. Dani corrected that the actual event wasn't as harrowing as the media had made it sound, and assured the guard that she didn't have a gun in the box...“It's a bomb,” Dani declared seriously, laughing after letting George sweat for a few moments. She swore she no longer had any animosity toward Bill or Hayley whatsoever.
Dani went on to say that her gift, which she wanted to leave inside the locked house, would show the newlyweds exactly how she felt about them and asked George for the security code. George feared he would lose his job, but Dani buttered him up and said granting her entry would be their secret. “8-3-9-4-2 – but you didn't hear it from me,” George finally said. George went on his way, and Dani's smile faded as she let herself into the abode.
Meanwhile, Bill and Hayley were riding back to Fairmont Crest from Manhattan in a limo, discussing the sites they had seen and how they'd had to cut their honeymoon short; they decided to continue the wedding night in the back of the chauffeured conveyance.
Seeing Bill's security camera when she came in, Dani was able to disable it having recalled Bill's usual passcode from when they were married. Dani brought her box into Bill's living room whistling Wagner's “Bridal Chorus.” She spotted a 33-year-old bottle of wine – the same vintage she and Bill had sipped during their own wedding. Dani recalled how Bill had been relentless in chasing down the bottles from that year...and her. She popped open the bottle and drank straight from it.
At the Duprees', the doorbell rang; it was George, who had noticed the latch on their back gate was broken. They invited George to stay for dessert since their kids had had to bail – after they reported that Dani had gone to an important business meeting, George almost gave away that he had seen Dani but pivoted by remarking that he was surprised she was out working so late.
A now drunken Dani stumbled around Bill's living room, not knowing whether to blame him or Hayley for her heartache. She decided they could both share the blame and smashed their framed wedding photo with the wine bottle. Dani announced that she and that particular vintage were too good for Bill Hamilton, before passing out on his couch as Bill and Hayley's limo got closer to Maryland.
