What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Bill couldn't believe that Naomi was removing herself from the sexual harassment lawsuit against his firm. He was sure the move was a set-up, but Naomi assured her father it wasn't and informed him he could check with the courts to verify it. Bill still didn't believe that her former clients had just suddenly retained a new attorney after Naomi had been so determined. Naomi surmised that some fights weren't worth the collateral damage, though Bill assumed that, since he could testify that his former employees misrepresented the facts, Naomi knew the case was a losing one.
When Naomi denied Bill's claim, he moved on to intimating that she had stopped believing in the suit. He was still of the opinion that Naomi had only filed it to get back at him for what he had supposedly done to Dani. Naomi argued how she'd been with Dani for every tear and watched her turn into someone unrecognizable because Bill had played house with Naomi's best friend. Bill considered his point proven and wanted to know why Naomi had given up her chance for payback. Naomi insisted that his accusation about her rationale in filing the case wasn't true no matter how many times he uttered it.
Naomi admitted that Bill had simply been right about the suit being a conflict of interest, with father and daughter on opposing sides of counsel – recusing herself had been right for the clients. Bill wouldn't let go of the idea that Naomi had backed away because of family, so Naomi conceded that she was scared, except she wouldn't elaborate. When Bill continued pressing the matter, Naomi blurted out that she loved him. Bill was moved when Naomi added that life was too short to ruin whatever time they had left. Bill hadn't realized that his hand having gone numb had factored into things.
Naomi was upset that Bill had cross examined her instead of just listening when she'd come by to say she'd removed herself from the case. Bill said he missed both Naomi and Chelsea, and had been glad to see Naomi more, even if it had only been because of the suit. The lawyer predicted that Naomi would understand when she and Jacob had kids. Bill had been saddened by how the girls used to tell him everything when they were little but barely communicated with him once they got older.
Naomi divulged that she'd adored spending time with Bill while she was in law school and learning from him, but then... “I left your mother, Naomi,” Bill conveyed gently. “I didn't leave you and Chelsea.” After Bill got Naomi to admit that she'd pulled away after he began his affair with Hayley, Naomi asked Bill how he was really doing. Bill's wall went up: he pooh-poohed “the hand thing” as nothing and didn't want Naomi's pity. But Naomi revealed she was learning that one could be unable to forgive someone yet still love them – and she'd come to the realization that the courtroom wasn't the place for her and Bill to settle their differences. Bill smiled that they were finally on the same page about something.
Later, Mike saw Bill, having heard about Naomi's appearance. Mike was ecstatic when he learned that Naomi had removed herself from the case, feeling that whatever schmuck had replaced her wouldn't be able to stand up to Bill. The accused lawyer was ready to dig up dirt on his new adversary, but Bill envisioned a different way of taking care of the problem – he fired Mike, who had become a liability to the firm.
Doug was so cheerful at the hospital that Shanice noticed. She also noticed that Doug's surgery schedule was overloaded; Doug said it kept the bills paid and turned down her advice to ease up on himself. Randy, after having taken a phone call from Joey, interrupted Doug's attempt to leave under the watchful eye of Shanice. Doug pretended Randy was the nephew of a patient and pulled him aside, questioning if Randy was there to get him back on the gambling tables. Randy claimed he was merely there to check on Doug, since the surgeon had been rattled in the OR the night before. Adamant, Doug described how he had nearly lost his patient with his hand shaking from obsessing over betting, which could have gotten him fired or jailed. Doug knew Joey needed to be paid and meant to settle his debt through his hospital earnings, though Randy was concerned about Doug quitting gambling cold turkey. Randy reported back to Joey, agreeing that Doug would soon have “the itch” again and be back at the casino.
Diego greeted Vanessa at the club, suggesting they have a private workout in an empty suite. Vanessa was tempted, but turned cold and dismissed the proposition. After their traditional training session, Diego felt that Vanessa had been distracted, possibly because of her clients; the annoyed Vanessa felt that Diego was making a dig about Joey and reminded him she didn't want to talk about the casino owner. Before Diego could further make his case, Doug arrived, ready for his own workout. When Diego begged off of doing a session with Doug, Vanessa maneuvered her lover into spotting her husband, brattily making a show of kissing Doug for Diego.
Smitty helped Samantha learn how to pose with attitude, but Martin came in informing Tyrell he had learned from a digging reporter about the embarrassing photo of Tyrell in his underwear, and about the nasty comments from his schoolmates accompanying it. Tyrell was furious that the pic had gotten out, since the school had a closed network. Martin relayed that he had stopped the reporter from going to media outlets with the photo in exchange for a future scoop, but he and Smitty were disturbed that Tyrell had made up a story about falling off his bike instead of coming to them with the truth.
Smitty gently asked how Tyrell had really gotten his bruises. The teen confessed what had happened with the pic being sent from his phone to the most popular girl in school, whose boyfriend had clocked him. Tyrell himself was over the incident, but the haters weren't; other students were down on Tyrell being a congressman's son. Martin made ready to go to his office, but Tyrell didn't want his dad using his contacts to fix the situation.
Martin and Smitty tried to impress upon Tyrell how serious the cyberbullying was, but Tyrell said it “wasn't that deep” and called his parents part of the problem, since they had brought him to “this bougie world” and his classmates couldn't relate to him. Samantha had to agree that she'd had some difficulties on that score as well, and Tyrell added that he couldn't make friends with Martin throwing his weight around. Tyrell angrily left after he said it was why he hadn't opened up about the picture and its fallout.
Smitty advised the irritated Martin not to take Tyrell's words personally. “He basically said we shouldn't have adopted him!” Martin exclaimed, telling Smitty they had chosen public school over private school for the kids so they could have normal lives. The politician was frustrated that he could help pass laws that changed the entire country but couldn't stop his son from being harassed. Smitty empathized with his husband, but agreed with Ted that there were times they needed to step back and let their kids work out their own problems. “Don't you first have to fall to learn to get back up?” Smitty asked.
Martin appreciated how he and Smitty had different parenting styles, with each bringing something different to the table, but he didn't think it made either of them always right. Smitty maintained that they needed to be a team on the issue of Tyrell and allow him to become his own man. As Martin grabbed his coat to “do something,” Smitty warned that he was only about to make things worse.
Blasting loud music and slugging down vodka, Dani walked an imaginary runway, then took a disapproving look at herself in the mirror. She called Andre and promised him a show that would make his wildest fantasies look tame if he ditched his documentary work and came right over. Andre ran into Jacob, who had heard about Andre's documentary and how much time Andre was spending with Ashley. Jacob was surprised when Andre refused to let him set Andre up with a girl because he had somewhere better to be.
Drunk, Dani called Andre multiple times, petulant over his not having arrived yet. She stumbled down her makeshift catwalk again and fell on her couch; Andre arrived in that moment and found Dani unable to stop giggling. Andre carried the barely conscious Dani upstairs and put her to bed, giving her some pills. After a while, Dani woke up, still not sober, and ordered Andre to let her show him her modeling strut. “Okay,” she purred once she was done, “now you can hold me.” They fell into a kiss, but Dani still looked sad.
At their home, Jacob could tell from Naomi's expression that she had gone ahead and had herself taken off the case. Naomi told her husband how she felt that she had been the one on trial with Bill demanding answers for her change of mind. Naomi said that her turning point had come when she started thinking about what the battle would mean for any future relationship with Bill. Jacob comforted his wife by cuddling her.
