Doug McBride (Jason Graham) is a brilliant heart surgeon and he’s been playing a dicey game indeed. Gambling has taken over his life to the extent that he changes his surgery schedule to accommodate his gambling. Not only is his life being run by his need to get back on a winning streak and win back what he’s lost, the cards are rigged and it’s clear Doug will never get ahead. Doug has a good friend in Randy (Maurice P. Kerry) and he’s tried to talk to Doug but it’s all fallen on deaf ears until now.

Doug keeps digging.

Doug and Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) describe their marriage as a “ships passing in the night” relationship that works for them both, but Vanessa is just as tangled up now, as she has feelings for Joey after meetings with him to discuss realty needs that quickly turned flirtatious. Joey has Doug and Vanessa exactly where he needs them, eating out of the palm of his hand and in the case of Doug it’s fair to say Joey owns him through his debt. In the last week Doug said he hasn't gotten more than four hours of sleep and the strain is starting to take its toll. Any balance Doug thought he had has now completely vanished as we saw when an emergency happened and Doug was needed to conduct surgery. Doug had to leave the casino on a potential winning streak, Joey was delighted and said “Good, he was starting to win, we can't have that.”

Doug has a breakthrough

At the hospital Doug had to do emergency surgery on a little boy, he couldn't hold it together, and had to bail on the surgery and have the attending surgeon finish the operation. Afterwards in a moment of clarity, Doug realized his gambling had gone too far. Randy called Doug to ask how he was, and Doug said that he nearly killed a little boy in the operating room because his hands were shaking like a windscreen wiper at warp speed. Randy listened as Doug said that something has to give and it’s not his career.

Doug told Randy that he needs to quit gambling. This is the right decision but it’s going to have major fallout and consequences if Doug actually does quit gambling. Vanessa is in the firing line, Joey doesn't have a good reputation, as far as people who cross him goes. Doug could stand to lose everything. Will Doug be able to dig himself out of this one? Coming clean to Vanessa might not have the intended effect, as she quite likes her life of luxury and freedom to enjoy other people. We can only hope that Jacob (Jibre Hordges) can put Joey behind bars, or Randy can come to Dougs aid in his time of need. One thing is for certain, this leafy Maryland suburb can turn real dark, real quick.
