Beyond the Gates: Are the Duprees The New "Untouchables"?

On Beyond the Gates, the Dupree family represents the very epitome of black royalty and the upper class. With one look at Fairmont Estate, you can smell the money! Are the Duprees untouchable?

The entire family needs to be examined, but let's focus on the main ones. We are but a few weeks into this new and groundbreaking CBS show, Beyond the Gates, and viewers have noticed a few things about the Dupree family. Therapy: Dani (Karla Mosley) needs treatment, and please not from her sister Nicole. The well-known and renowned psychiatrist Dr Nicole Dupree Richardson (Daphnée Duplaix) has even said to her father, ex-Senator Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis), that Dani messes up and she cleans up. That was their eternal dance. So, Nicole is aware of just how messed up Dani is, enables it, and leaves it to be, ready for the next round of living la vida loca. Indeed, now that Dani has pulled a gun at a wedding and tried to blow the bride away, that would show some signs of, I don't know? Repressed rage or something? And it would be a massive neon sign with sirens screaming, “Get me some help.”

Anita Dupree, played by the incredible Tamara Tunie, represents the Dupree family as the ever-strong matriarch but yells at the press conference (Held to smooth over Dani’s wedding rambo antics.) that the press should be ashamed of themselves for watching the livestream that Chelsea (Rhonnirose Mantilla) was doing of the wedding. This was laughable at first. Chelsea live-streamed the whole fiasco, and the press got slammed for watching it, having an opinion, and asking questions. Family loyalty is something to be proud of, but what's next? Dani loses it and kills someone?

Coercions and Obstructing Justice

Who’s up next? Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis), retired Senator, loves his wife, adorably so, and in the same episode as above, gives veiled threats to a policeman that he will be told what the statements are regarding the wedding shooting or his career is in jeopardy. That’s right; he told the policeman that he would be playing golf with his boss, the police chief, and let it be known that he could influence things with the way he said it, a little too much of the smile and eye contact. And just like that, the criminal investigation was to be buried there.

I could write a novel about why Dani is off the hook, round the bend, “cheese slid off the cracker,” crazy. But we all see it; no one does anything about it. Someone get the girl some help. The Duprees are untouchable, like Elliot Ness, and Beyond the Gates is off to the races with fast-moving stories and plenty of drama. Stay tuned on weekdays for your next fix, fellow soap fans.
