Netflix's latest political thriller, Zero Day, starring Robert DeNiro as former US President George Mullen, just dropped on the platform and is the talk of the town.
After a dangerous cyber attack on America, Goerge is asked to head the commission to investigate the attack, but as the show progresses, it becomes clear that he might not be in the right frame of mind to head a national investigation.
Among other things, he keeps seeing dead Anna Sindler everywhere. Anna, a political writer, was a character who died in Episode 1, during the cyber attack. But there was mystery around her death as George saw her everywhere and was convinced that she had faked her death.
However, that was not the case, as George had visions of Anna, and she was actually dead.
More on Anna's character in Zero Day in our story.
Exploring Anna Sindler's character in Zero Day
Anna Sindler is the first character we see interacting with George. She is a political writer who motivated him to write his memoir after he retired from the post of the US President.
She is also the first character we see dying in the cyber-attack on America, which crashed all the train, subway, and airport systems. In Episode 1, after she leaves George's house, she receives a text on her phone, which says, 'This will happen again', and seconds after this, her car is hit by a train, and she dies on the spot.
After the attack, President Mitchell asked George to head the Zero Day commission and investigate who was after the cyberattack on America. After mulling over his decision, George finally holds a press conference where he sees Anna in the crowd, which confirms to him that she is not dead.
Throughout the show, George keeps seeing Anna in various places, which makes him obsessed with finding the truth about her death, and he employs Roger to investigate her.
Was Anna Sindler actually dead in Zero Day?
Yes, Roger's investigation confirmed that Anna actually died, and she had no connections with the cyber-attack. But since George kept seeing Anna everywhere, Roger managed to get a DNA sample from her exhumed body to confirm that she was, in fact, dead.
The DNA test was positive, which confirmed that Anna had died and George was merely having visions of her because of his derailed state of mind.
George's mental state in Zero Day keeps him away from the actual truth, and he instead sends his team on many futile missions, such as investigating Anna's death. He also received pictures of Anna with Evan Green, making him think she was connected to the cyber attack. But that was too a red herring, as the pictures were fake.
George’s unstable state of mind could be attributed to his old age, but since he passed his psychological test, it’s also possible that the Proteus weapon—a lethal NSA device designed to target brain injuries—played a role, causing hallucinations and memory gaps in Zero Day’s universe. This explains George's visions about Anna and his mixup with the cooks at his house, but the series ends without revealing if George was affected by Proteus.
