Tom Holland has played Spider-Man in the Marvel movies for a long time. But in Marvel's animated shows, a different actor voices the character. One of them is Hudson Thames, who played Peter Parker in What If...? Season 1, Episode 5.
With Marvel’s new animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, already set for multiple seasons, Thames is now the voice of a younger Peter Parker.
So, why isn’t Tom Holland voicing Spider-Man in these animated series?
Tom Holland has a packed schedule. Between filming blockbuster movies, promoting them, and taking on new projects, he likely doesn’t have time to record for an animated series. Voice acting requires a different commitment, and it might not fit into his busy calendar.
The animated Spider-Man in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a younger version of Peter Parker, separate from Holland’s MCU character. Marvel Studios might want to keep the two versions distinct, allowing Thames to bring a fresh voice to this new take on Spidey.
Stepping into Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Marvel’s upcoming animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, introduces a new take on Peter Parker’s high school years. Thames has been cast as the lead, and with two more seasons already confirmed, he’s set to become the voice of Spider-Man in Marvel’s animated universe.
In What If...? Season 1, Episode 5, titled "What If... Zombies?!", Spider-Man was one of the few survivors of a zombie outbreak. Instead of Tom Holland, Hudson Thames voiced the web-slinger. His performance captured Peter Parker’s wit, heart, and determination, making it clear why Marvel chose him for more projects.
This series explores Peter’s early days as Spider-Man. Originally titled Spider-Man: Freshman Year, it follows his journey through high school, facing both teenage struggles and supervillain battles.
The show’s creators have hinted that villains will be developed over multiple seasons. This means we might see classic Spider-Man foes like Green Goblin, Doc Ock, or even new threats that haven’t appeared in the MCU yet.
Though this Spider-Man exists in a different timeline, there’s always a chance for crossovers. Marvel Zombies, another upcoming animated show, could feature Thames's Spider-Man, just like What If...? did.
While Tom Holland remains the MCU’s live-action Spider-Man, Hudson Thames is taking over in the animated world. Whether due to scheduling, budget, or creative choices, Marvel has found a talented voice actor to bring Peter Parker to life.
With Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man already set for multiple seasons, fans have plenty to look forward to in this fresh take on the web-slinger.
