Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has premiered on Disney+ after much anticipation. The animated series focuses on an alternate timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Peter Parker attends Rockford T. Bales High School instead of Midtown and is mentored by Norman Osborn.
Apart from exploring the origin story of the superhero, the show has established an important character in the very first episode who could pose a threat to Peter in the future. Lonnie Lincoln, voiced by Eugene Byrd, is seen as Peter’s classmate and the school’s football team captain.
While the teen seems to have good intentions for now, Marvel Comics fans know him as the iconic villain Tombstone. Lonnie goes on a dark path in the comics and eventually turns into a formidable enemy for Spider-Man.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s Lonnie Lincoln is the villainous Tombstone in Marvel Comics
Lonnie Lincoln, known by his supervillain name Tombstone, is a major antagonist in Marvel Comics. He was created by Gerry Conway and Alex Saviuk and first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #36 in 1988.
Tombstone had a tough childhood, where he was bullied for his albinism, which ultimately led him down a criminal path. Tombstone did not have any powers initially and started as a street-level gangster. During his high school days, he used threats and violence to control other students.
Tombstone’s life changed when he was exposed to a special gas that gave him superhuman strength and made it almost impossible for him to feel pain. With his new powers, Tombstone became even more dangerous and took control of his own crime organization in New York.
He worked for crime bosses like Kingpin and later rose to lead his criminal empire. Apart from Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Tombstone has been featured in other television shows, including Spider-Man: The Animated Series. He has appeared in several Spider-Man comics and video games as well.
How Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man sets up Lonnie Lincoln’s villain arc
The first two episodes of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man have hinted that the show is not only going to focus on Peter Parker’s origin story but also explore Tombstone’s origins. In the show, Lonnie Lincoln is introduced as a smart and talented high school athlete.
He seems very different from his comic version. Instead of being a bully, he is shown as a hardworking student who does well in school and is also a star quarterback. He cares a lot about his family and is someone Peter Parker can relate to.
The series also explores how Lonnie's life is shaped by different challenges as he faces discrimination due to his race. He often has to deal with unfair treatment and work harder to prove himself.
This shows a difference between Peter’s and Lonnie’s journeys, even though both possess some similar qualities and capabilities. The contrast adds depth to Lonnie’s character and helps the audience understand his struggles.
Even though Lonnie starts as a good student with a bright future in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, his fate is ultimately going to make him a supervillain as he gets involved with the criminal group 110.
However, instead of showcasing Tombstone as an outright villain, the show does a great job of depicting the hardships faced by Lonnie and explaining why he eventually turns into a bad guy. His tragic transformation might be one of the major highlights of the show in the future.
