Fresh from the house of Marvel, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is all set to release its first two episodes on Disney+ on January 29, 2025. While fans are excited about this new series, Hudson Thames, who plays the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, recently discussed one of his major fears regarding the series.
In an interview with Collider on January 28, 2025, Thames revealed that while he was excited about the project, his only concern before starring on the show was that it might be regarded as too woke. The term woke has now come to a point where its usage inevitably hints at negative criticism.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a fresh take on the MCU superhero. It also features characters like Lonnie Lincoln and Norman Osborn, who have never been in the MCU.
As with so many experimental works, fans often end up disappointed and criticize shows that try to be new in their approach to an already established theme and pattern. Let us now explore Thames’ concern and what else he had to say about the animated series.
Hudson Thames felt concerned about Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man being considered woke
Hudson Thames, who voiced Spiderman in What If…? Season 1, comes back in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
When asked about the animated series and what his reaction was to being a part of a new take on the already popular Spider-man storyline, Thames said:
"I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn't, and I was like, 'Yes, this is great, it's so well written,' like it feels real. I'm the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what's happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice."
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has already come under some fire because of the casting of Colman Domingo as Norman Osborne. Fans reportedly expressed their frustration on Reddit about the character being black, which they felt made less sense story-wise and was more about being woke.
Thames’ concern, therefore, was based on valid grounds. However, it remains to be seen how the audience reacts to the show post its release.
More on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man focuses on the origin story of Peter Parker, but in an alternate timeline within the multiverse and in that world, he is mentored by Norman Osborn instead of Tony Stark, as shown in the main timeline of MCU.
Besides Hudson Thames and Colman Domingo as Peter Parker and Norman Osborne, the movie also stars Hugh Dancy, Kari Wahlgren, Eugene Byrd, and Zeno Robinson as Otto Octavius, Aunt May, Lonnie Lincoln, and Harry Osborn, respectively.
