GGRRM's Game of Thrones has been a fan-favorite show that ran for almost a decade and over 73 episodes. From solid critic and audience reviews to commendable numbers on streaming charts, it has been at the top spot over the years.
With multiple characters being introduced and written off the show, the HBO classic has a long ensemble cast list. So, it is quite natural that if one of the supporting roles is suddenly recast, viewers will not be able to spot it easily. One such character is Lothar Frey of House Frey hailing from the Riverlands, located in the central part of Westeros.
The part was initially portrayed by Tom Brooke (known from Slow Horses and Preacher) and later, it was handed over to Daniel Tuite (from The Last Kingdom) in the sixth season of Game of Thrones. Even though the reason is still debatable, there have been a lot of speculations as to why he was dropped off the script. Follow this article to find out more.
The role Lothar Frey was recast in the sixth chapter of Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones lovers will definitely find the name Lothar Frey very familiar (even though it was a supporting role). The Riverlands lord also goes by the identity Lame Lothar, and the character was initially introduced in the third season of Game of Thrones.
His father is the infamous Lord Walder Frey of the Riverlands, who is later killed by Arya Stark of Winterfell in Season 6. When fans saw Tom Brooke stepping up for the part of Lothar Frey, he was also given the recognition of the Lord of the Crossing.
Tom Brooke's Lothar made his on-screen debut in Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 9 titled 'The Red Wedding' - one of the most heartbreaking episodes of the entire show. It is a massacre that was devised jointly by three houses- House Lannister (rulers of Westeros), House Frey and House Bolton, to curb down the rise of Robb Star, King in the North.
Lothar Frey's part in carrying out the planned execution of the Starks during 'The Red Wedding' was pivotal to the plot (he struck the first blow), and Tim Brooke did quite the justice to the role. Following The Red Wedding's tragic ending, the character did not get any screen time until the sixth season when a new face was introduced - Daniel Tuite.
The latter part did not have any major contribution to the story and as per reports, no official statements were given by HBO as well. However, a number of sources had stated that Brooke's engagement in the AMC horror show Preacher (that was also under production at the same time) might be a possible cause.
Thus, conflicts in Tom Brooke's overlapping filming schedule reportedly resulted in the character going off-screen for two seasons straight, and Daniel Tuite later got the part. Though there have also been theories all over social media that the recast was deliberately done to maintain certain creative continuities, nothing official ever came out of it.
