BollyX, a Bollywood-inspired dance fitness program, danced their way into the Shark Tank stage in Season 9, Episode 16, which aired in 2018. The founders brought high-energy enthusiasm to their pitch, hoping to secure a deal with the Sharks. They sought an investment to expand their business, emphasizing their unique fitness approach that blended Indian dance moves with a high-intensity workout. While the pitch was vibrant and engaging, the numbers behind the business left some sharks skeptical.
Specifically, Mark Cuban was eager to express his worries. After the founder opened up about how he only owned 25% equity of the company, the investor became vocal about his concerns.
"The reality is, if you don't set a very high valuation, you will get diluted to nothing." He continued, "I feel like you're grasping for solutions and I don't get a sense of confidence that you know exactly what you need to do to get where you want to go. I hope you get there. I'm not going to be there with you. For those reasons, I'm out."
Other sharks too expressed their concerns with the valuation. By the end of the day, the founder of BollyX, Shahil Patel, wasn't able to impress and get on board any of the panelists.
When BollyX appeared on Shark Tank Season 9 Episode 16
Season 9, episode 16 of Shark Tank featured BollyX's Bollywood energy. In order to raise money to grow their brand, the creators made a proposal for their intense dancing fitness program. They wanted to wow the Sharks and advance their business by combining Indian dance with cardio exercises in a novel way.
Shahil Patel went on stage to promote BollyX, a dance fitness program with Bollywood influences, seeking $375,000 for 8% equity. BollyX had become a national phenomenon at the time of the pitch, with more than 2,000 instructors operating in more than 30 states. The company had also partnered with gyms and fitness centers to integrate its high-energy routines into mainstream workout programs.
With thousands of active participants and licensed teachers, the company had already achieved success with high engagement figures. BollyX is a scalable fitness platform that also made money from instructor training programs and class subscriptions. BollyX was positioned as a dynamic player in the fitness sector by his pitch, which highlighted the program's capacity to combine high-intensity workouts with cultural liveliness.
The Shark Tank experts were reluctant to invest in BollyX despite the company's dynamic pitch and remarkable growth. Mark Cuban expressed worries about dilution and cautioned that the founders would lose control if they shared too many shares. After first expressing interest, guest investor Rohan Oza eventually withdrew because of valuation concerns. Since no shark was prepared to make the risk, BollyX exited the tank with insightful business information but no contract.
