Netflix's You is one of the captivating psychological thrillers, which stars Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley in the lead role of Joe Goldberg. It features Joe as a perilously fixated man who will do whatever it takes, including manipulation and lying, to be with the women he loves.
You explore the crooked reasoning behind Joe, who frequently justifies his extreme behavior as a necessity driven by love. The Netflix series is an adaptation of Caroline Kepnes' novels and gives the viewer a contemporary tale of love but with a twist that is macabre.
For the world, Joe is a charming and intelligent man, but little does anyone know that he's actually a predator. What makes Joe even more chilling is that he believes himself to be the hero of his story, rationalizing every crime he commits.
The first Season kicked off with Joe working as a bookstore manager, who later becomes obsessed with Guinevere Beck, an aspiring writer. The man uses social media platforms and other means to keep tabs on the woman, and his manipulation begins.
In the second Season, Joe assumes a new identity but remains as obsessive as before. This time, he gets attracted to a chef named Love Quinn, but unlike Joe's past attractions, Love proves to be different. However, the two eventually tie the knot and welcome their first child in You Season 3.
Things turned ugly in Season 3 as Joe wanted a divorce, and after learning of his desire, Love planned to kill him. In the end, Love ends up getting killed by Joe, who later fakes his death and moves to London with a new name.
Keep reading to learn what happened in Season 4.
You Season 4 recap: Joe's identity and crisis transformation
Before starting with You Season 5, here's what happened in the fourth chapter: As mentioned earlier, Joe moves to London after killing Love, and this time under the alias Jonathan Moore. As he begins another new life, Joe crosses paths with Kate Galvin, an art gallery manager with a cold and reserved personality.
Soon, Joe starts experiencing mental dissociation, due to which he barely remembers his actions. As the season progresses, Joe notices a mysterious figure named Rhys Montrose, who influences Joe's dark and violent urges.
Over time, Joe learns that Rhys isn't real; instead, he's a reflection of his own dark impulses. This leads Joe to take on the dark path again without full awareness.
The "Eat the rich" mystery in You Season 4

Another major storyline in You Season 4 is the "Eat the rich" mystery, in which a serial killer of the same name has been terrorizing London's wealthy elite. Since Joe is deeply in love with Kate, he's trying to protect her amid the chaos and murders.
However, the truth is quite disturbing and startling—Joe himself is the killer. His mind created the alter ego Rhys, who was meant to distract him from committing crimes. But in reality, Joe has been killing the elites, but in his mind, he thinks he's innocent.
Key relationships and twists in You Season 4

As Joe continues to show his love for Kate, the two get closer, and their relationship deepens in You Season 4. Kate starts trusting Joe, but her father, Tom Lockwood, is convinced that Joe is nothing but a threat to his daughter and blackmails him.
His alter ego, Rhys, keeps telling Joe that he needs to kill Lockwood, and as a result, Joe ends up eliminating Kate's father. What's even more shocking is that Kate decides to stand by Joe's side and starts covering up his crime.
This way, she proves her full commitment to Joe, who later frames an innocent woman, Nadia, for the murder. As Season 4 comes to an end, Joe Goldberg achieves something he never had before: power, wealth, and a completely clean public image.
The two move back to New York, and Kate's influence has helped Joe become more dangerous than ever. Without self-denial, Joe has fully embraced his identity as a killer. In the upcoming You Season 5, viewers will see him become an unstoppable predator, raising the chilling question: Who will be his next victim?
