In a tense first commitment ceremony of Married at First Sight Australia 2025, relationship expert John Aiken didn't hold back when confronting the groom, Tim Gromie, about his treatment of his bride, Katie Johnson.

"You deflected, you blamed her for everything, you said she broke your trust, you said that you were the most honest of the two of you and, ultimately, you made her feel like she was going crazy," John said, calling Tim's behavior "gaslighting 101."

The heated exchange came after weeks of mounting tension between the couple, culminating in Tim storming out of the previous dinner party and temporarily ghosting Katie. Both Married at First Sight participants ultimately chose to write "leave" on their cards, marking the end of their troubled journey on the show.

Tim rejected Katie from their wedding day on, saying she wasn't his physical "type." This is part of a reality dating experiment that pairs strangers who first meet at the altar.

Married at First Sight viewers and other competitors were outraged by Katie's experience, and during the dinner party showdown, co-star Jamie called Tim a "gaslighter" for accusing Katie of not putting enough effort into their relationship.

What happened between Katie and Tim in this season of Married at First Sight Australia?

The commitment ceremony began with uncertainty as Katie arrived alone, unsure if Tim would even show up after his dramatic exit from the dinner party. When Tim finally walked in late, Katie visibly recoiled.

Katie opened up about her Married at First Sight experience, revealing how Tim had left for Melbourne without telling her and had repeatedly emphasized she wasn't his type.

"I'm not any of that and I'm OK with who I am, I like who I am, but you don't want to focus on anything good I have? You're just focusing on what I don't have," she explained.

Tim attempted to deflect, claiming Katie had been reading emails during their honeymoon instead of paying attention to him.

"When you feel that someone's not there for you, that's not a partner I want," he said.

It was at this point that relationship expert John Aiken stepped in with his blistering assessment of Tim's behavior. His "gaslighting 101" comment silenced the room as he questioned why Tim had returned to the experiment at all.

The expert didn't spare Tim's feelings, pointing out how he had consistently shifted blame onto Katie throughout their relationship. John noted it "broke his heart" to hear Katie "blame herself for the downfall of the relationship."

When confronted, Tim said:

"I feel like it's a lot on me but there just hasn't been the other way back," before revealing he had written "leave" on his card.

The commitment ceremony confrontation followed an explosive dinner party where Tim's behavior first raised serious red flags among the group. In a shocking display, Tim accused Katie of making minimal effort in their relationship.

"I've been the one making most of the effort," Tim claimed, leaving Katie stunned.

She responded, visibly hurt by his accusation:

"Are you serious?"

Tim then delivered the line that sparked outrage:

"I feel like my trust has been broken."

This comment proved too much for fellow contestant Jamie, who erupted in Katie's defense.

"He's gaslighting her," Jamie shouted.

Yelling further:

"Am I the only one seeing what's going on here? That is not OK. I won't sit here and tolerate that."

Jamie's frustration eventually boiled over into a dramatic exit, with her declaring:

"I can't die on this hill charging at this mother f*****."

Tim’s pattern of behavior explored

Tim's behavior at the dinner party and commitment ceremony wasn't isolated. He was disappointed from the first time he saw Katie at the altar, informing producers that she "wasn't his type" soon after their wedding.

Tim maintained their distance during their honeymoon, whining about Katie's alleged lack of interest while doing little to establish a connection.

When the group questioned his motives, Tim accused Katie of "betraying" him by not standing up for him, which escalated the situation. Katie broke down in tears and apologized:

"I'm a rookie when it comes to relationships," she said, taking on blame that wasn't hers.

Married at First Sight viewers' reactions to the show were heated, with many voicing concern for Katie's welfare. Some called for production intervention, questioning why Tim was allowed to continue his behavior unchecked until the commitment ceremony.

Despite the turbulent experience, Katie maintained her composure during the Married at First Sight commitment ceremony. After both participants chose to leave, Katie delivered a powerful parting message:

"I know that I am strong, independent and somebody worthy of love."

This chapter of the experiment concluded with Katie and Tim saying goodbye to the other couples, with many participants expressing support for Katie.

While the Married at First Sight experiment didn't result in love for Katie, John Aiken's confrontation with Tim offered her a form of validation that many viewers felt was long overdue.
