The Dutton family saga finally ends with Yellowstone Season 5 as the iconic ranch is returned to its original owners. While the stories will continue through spinoffs and prequel series, the flagship series, which debuted in 2018, isn't confirmed to continue for further seasons.
The Yellowstone Season 5 finale brought closure to the central storylines of the Dutton family. Following the tragic end of the family's patriarch, John Dutton, his children Kayce and Beth had to make tough decisions.
In a surprising move, Kayce Dutton decides to sell the ranch to its original owners—the Broken Rock Reservation at $1.25 per acre, the price at which his ancestors brought the land. This isn't just a financial transaction, as Kayce also fulfilled the Dutton prophecy, which says that the land will return to its owners in seven generations.
A treaty between Kayce and Chief Thomas Rainwater dictates that the Chief must preserve the land, keeping it undeveloped. As seen in the last episode "Life Is A Promise", Chief Rainwater assured that he would honor the treaty and that the land would never change.

Chief Thomas Rainwater will honor the agreement made in Yellowstone Season 5
The legacy of the Duttons is marked by their ownership of Yellowstone Ranch, and the promise to declare it a wilderness area highlights the respect for its original heritage and protection from development. Actor Gil Birmingham, who brought Chief Rainwater to life, also talked about his character staying true to the treaty.
Birmingham opened up about the treaty and its implications in an interview with ScreenRant. The actor explained that Indigenous people have historically respected agreements:
"I think Thomas will honor the treaty. [Chuckles] I'll just say that much, we'll honor the treaty like we always have. It's never been us who have broken any of our treaties, and that's out of respect."
The actor also shed light on Tate Dutton, the son of Monica and Kayce, who has both Dutton and Native heritage. Not only this, but Tate also represents the seventh generation, about which the Dutton prophecy was made.
This makes him a key figure who also has the opportunity to engage with the Native community and strengthen their relations with the Duttons. Like his father, Tate respects the Indigenous people, and his connection to both communities would help him gain significant experience.

Gil Birmingham talked about Chief Thomas Rainwater's potential future in Yellowstone
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gil Birmingham answered several intriguing questions and shared his experience filming the final and emotional scenes of Season 5. The actor discussed the possibility of continuing Rainwater's storyline and mentioned that a potential spin-off of some tribes might contribute to expanding the Yellowstone verse.
Birmingham suggested that if the Taylor Sheridan TV series continues, it has the potential to focus on Rainwater and the Broken Rock Tribe. One possibility he mentioned was the tribe using the land to educate about nature and the land's historical and cultural significance.
However, there would still be challenges as the "corporate world is not going to sit by on opportunities; they are going to look for loopholes of some sort to generate more power, more money, more revenue," just like in John Dutton’s story. So, if the story continues, fans might see more drama and conflicts.
