The third Season of Yellowjackets slowly sets up the mysteries for a sinister season for this survival thriller and drama. The latest episode of Season three, "Them's the Brakes" has the main characters haunted by scary visions. Meanwhile, a wedge is driven in Shauna and Misty's friendship, after a near-death experience.

This episode also answers one of the smaller mysteries that fans have been wondering about since the very first season of Yellowjackets. It finally provides the origin tale of the Man with No Eyes. Fans have been coming up with dark theories about this man's origin ever since the show began, but the truth contrasts with all the fan theories.

Yellowjackets Season 3 Episode 3 recap:

As stated before, this episode of Yellowjackets answers one of the longstanding mysteries. In addition, some of the most important moments revolved around visions. Here are some of the major moments of the third episode, "Them's the Brakes.":

  • Lottie angers Shauna

In the previous two episodes of Yellowjackets, we see Lottie bond with Callie. Shauna has been a bit incensed by her daughter bonding with one of her friends who ran a dangerous cult. While we are unsure if Lottie is actually out of the cult, it is clear that she is influencing Callie. She crosses a line this time by giving Callie Jackie's heart necklace.

  • Misty and Shauna survive an accident.

Misty and Shauna are driving in the latter's car when the two encounter a problem: the brakes aren't working. Shauna manages to steer the car towards a field without hitting a car or any pedestrians nearby. Both are totally shocked by this incident, and a shaken Shauna blames Misty for this incident. Misty denies the blame and denounces her friendship with Shauna.

  • Van's cancer has stopped spreading in her body

Vanessa "Van" Palmer is diagnosed with terminal cancer. She is visiting her doctor and makes a shocking discovery. The shocked doctor informs her that the cancer isn't spreading throughout her body. She gives this news to Taissa, who comes to the conclusion that the waiter's death from the previous episode served as a sacrifice. While hanging out with her, Taissa also learns something shocking.

  • Taissa realizes the origin of the Man with No Eyes

Van and Taissa are watching a VHS tape when the latter finally realizes where the Man with No Eyes comes from. He comes from an old commercial for an ice cream parlor. Some Yellowjackets fans called the number seen on the screen, and this message was played to the caller:

"Hello. Yeah. This is Ozzie's, the homemade ice cream place out on Route 9. As of now, our scoops are broken, our pie plates cracked, and our doors have closed for the last time. . . . 34 years. . . ."
  • Past Shauna, Van, and Akilah experience detailed hallucinations

While exploring Ben's cave, Van, Akilah, and Shauna begin to hallucinate. Their visions are different, but they later converge in a vision of being in a classroom with Jackie. The three crash into this converging vision after experiencing their own separate disturbing hallucinations as well. Van is stuck inside a burning cabin, Akilah meets a talking llama, and Shauna is unable to save her dead son.

Yellowjackets showrunner Jonathan Lisco was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, in which he explained the hallucination experienced by the three. He said this about Akilah's hallucination:

"You have all the characters on the board and frankly, I think we could have taken any of them through that hallucinatory sequence and mined it for a lot of great story. But after kicking the tires on it, we really felt like Akilah, who is a child of nature who loves the plants and animals, was ripe for a subversion of her preconceptions about what is good about the wilderness."

Lisco also explained Van's visions in this Yellowjackets episode like this:

"Similarly, Van almost expired, if you recall, in the second episode of the entire series when they were left for dead after the plane crashed. Van has this way of being sarcastic and irreverent and acting like that didn’t really affect them at all and they’ve moved on. But, have they moved on? So their “dream” was to be strapped into that chair, unable to get out while the cabin is on fire. They’re about to expire. And then, if you look closely, it’s the hand of the cabin guy, the hand of Javi [Luciano Leroux, who they let die and ate in season two], the hand of Laura Lee [Jane Widdop, who died in season one] coming in, and it all comes rushing back."

However, the most heartbreaking hallucination in this episode of Yellowjackets was that of Shauna. The showrunner discussed her hallucination in detail by saying:

"Then with Shauna, that one felt the most tragic and poignant, because here’s Shauna having lost her baby and needing to move on as a 17-year-old in the woods, and now she has this moment where she sees the boy on the banks of the lake, swims toward him but is only getting further away. We felt that was incredibly sad and tragic, but equally might stir up some ideas of her own complicity in not being able to save the baby. And that’s subjective; I’m not saying she’s responsible. She lives with this guilt in terms of her own body and her own ability to deliver that baby. Plus, the doubt over if what was explained to her by the others actually happened. She still harbors this suspicion of the other young women about whether or not they’re telling her the truth. And then of course, just the raw pain of having not been able to meet her child. That was beautiful in our minds and also really harrowing."

Losing her son in the wilderness has affected her deeply. She even confirms this to adult Lottie. Her fear of losing another child played a major role in straining her relationship with her daughter Callie.
