Even though Yellowjackets isn't exactly based on a true story, it takes cues from real-life events and cultural moments that make it feel real and eerie. The creators, Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco, have said that the well-known 1972 Andes flight disaster sparked the idea for the show.

The flight had members of the Uruguayan rugby team who got stuck in the mountains after their plane went down. They had to go to some extreme lengths to survive. Known as the "Miracle of the Andes," it has always grabbed people's attention, and you can feel that darkness in Yellowjackets.

Besides real-life events, Yellowjackets takes cues from William Golding's classic book, Lord of the Flies. Lyle found it interesting that a group of young women could spiral into chaos just like the guys in the novel when faced with tough situations.

In an interview with The New York Times, Lyle shared that when she toyed with the idea of remaking Lord of the Flies with an all-girl cast, she was taken aback by comments saying that girls couldn’t be as brutal.

So, what did she say in response?

"You were never a teenage girl, sir."

Why is Yellowjackets rated MA?

Yellowjackets deserves its TV-MA rating for many reasons. The show explores themes like violence, psychological trauma, and survival, and it doesn't hold back on the details. It digs into the harsh truths of what happens when teens are left out in the wild for too long.

You’ll see scenes of fights, cannibalism, and how the characters start to lose it as they deal with their situation. Aside from just surviving, Yellowjackets depicts heavy issues such as addiction, mental health issues, and the lasting effects of trauma. The flash-forward scenes give us a glimpse of the characters as adults and show how their tough experiences from their teen years still mess with them.

This leads to things like serious dr*g use, drinking problems, and rocky relationships. These aspects give the show its raw reality. It also means that the show is not suitable for kids. Common Sense Media suggests it's best for viewers 16 and up, with a warning about its explicit content.
