If you've ever caught yourself humming along to The Office theme song for the hundredth time, you’re not alone. And guess what? That iconic tune actually has lyrics, at least in the mind of Rainn Wilson, aka Dwight Schrute.
In a new episode of the Lemonada Media podcast Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know, Rainn dropped a hilarious bombshell: he had written lyrics to the famous theme song years ago. And finally, after a little nudge from Minhaj, he sang them out loud. Yep, the theme song we all thought was just a catchy tune now has a whole new meaning, and it's all about Dwight.
Let’s be real, The Office is one of those shows that feels like home. Whether you're watching it for the first time or the fiftieth, it's the kind of comfort show that never loses its charm.
That piano-driven theme? It’s a core memory. It plays, and instantly you’re back in Scranton, watching Michael do something wildly inappropriate, Jim smirk at the camera, and Dwight take himself way too seriously.
The viral podcast moment
Back in the early days, producer Greg Daniels considered a few different songs for the opening. He looked at Modest Mouse’s “Float On” and Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky.” But there was a snag.
“Mr. Blue Sky” was the front-runner, but another show, LAX, already snagged it. So Daniels went with an original composition by Jay Ferguson, a ‘70s pop icon, which was performed by a one-time band called The Scrantones. And the rest is sitcom history.
Back in his 2015 memoir, The Bassoon King, Rainn Wilson teased fans by revealing that he’d once written lyrics to The Office theme song. But plot twist, he didn’t include them in the book. Instead, he left fans with a cheeky line: “Perhaps I’ll sing them to you one day.”
Fast forward to 2025, and Hasan Minhaj is the one who finally makes that day happen.
“You said, ‘Perhaps I’ll sing them to you one day,’”
Minhaj reminded Wilson.
“Well, today is that day.”
Minhaj didn’t let it go. He pushed gently, joking that he was being really nice, so Wilson had to share the lyrics. After admitting it had been years since he wrote them, Wilson pulled out his phone and began.
He pressed play on the theme and, with a grin, began singing along:
The Office
A show about a boss
Mostly it’s a show about Dwight
Show is a lot of fun
Mostly Dwight’s a lot of fun
Remember Stanley
Mostly I remember Dwight
Krasinski’s manly
No one wants a bobblehead of Jim
Let's face it
It's a show about Dwight
Let’s get real
Honestly? These lyrics are peak Dwight. It's like a love letter to himself. Wilson played the role for all nine seasons, and it clearly left a lasting impression on him and us.
John Krasinski may have been the show's heartthrob, but Wilson’s lyrics clearly think differently. “No one wants a bobblehead of Jim?" That's Dwight-level sass right there.
Sometimes, the tiniest reveals hit the hardest, and Rainn Wilson singing the secret lyrics to The Office theme is one of those moments. It’s goofy, unexpected, and so perfectly Dwight. For fans who’ve been rewatching the show for years, this felt like a special little gift tucked into a new podcast episode.
