Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's eighth episode, “Tangled Web,” just gave a twisted version of the iconic Spider-Man line. Everyone is aware of the quote "With great power comes great responsibility" (as delivered in the 2002 movie) or "With great power there must also come great responsibility" (as it appears in Amazing Fantasy #15, the very first Spider-Man comic). However, the latest Spider-Man animated show gives us a much more darker version of the quote.
The eighth episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man opens with Peter on the operating table after getting stabbed in the closing moments of the previous episode by Mac Gargan. This incident deeply affects Peter, and he goes to Norman Osborn to seek the latter's advice. Norman suggests that Peter pulled his punches while the Scorpion did not. There, he also gives his twisted version of the iconic fan-favorite quote.
How did Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man twist Uncle Ben's iconic quote?
A distraught and scared Peter expresses his fear and doubts to Norman Osborn in the eighth episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Norman, in his reply, says the quote that fans of Spider-Man fans across the world know very well. However, unlike the 2002 movie or the comics, Osborn gives a new and sinister spin on the quote. It goes like this:
“With great power comes great respect - and if you don’t have respect, you have nothing. You need to give the world a reason to respect you.”
An ominous music is observable in the background as Norman Osborn gives this quote to Peter. The sinister version of this quote oddly suits Norman Osborn's character, who is one of Marvel Universe's egotistical characters. This change also hints that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Peter will need to outgrow his mentor if he is serious about helping people.
This version of the line also hints at how Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Norman Osborn will go on to become the Green Goblin. From a twisted perspective, Norman may also see fear as a form of respect. If he were to fall from grace, maybe Norman, under desperation, may experiment on himself for some sort of supersoldier serum but ends up transforming into the infamous Spidey villain.
Adding "great respect" instead of "great responsibility" changes the entire meaning of the line. The original meaning of the quote is to inspire an individual to act virtuously because it is virtuous and not because it will make you look good in the eyes of the people. It also hints at a much darker side of this version of Norman Osborn.
While it looks like Norman hasn't transformed yet, fans and viewers are still confused about his intentions. Showrunner Jeff Trammell and actor Colman Domingo vaguely addressed these questions to not spoil the upcoming episodes.
What did Colman Domingo and Jeff Trammell say about Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Norman Osborn?
Both Jeff Trammell and Colman Domingo discussed the show's version of Norman Osborn. The first of these teases came from showrunner and creator Jeff Trammell himself. He sat down for an interview with Collider’s Senior Editor Mike Thomas, in which the creator had this to say about the character of Norman Osborn:
“Yeah, so when you hear Norman Osborne is Peter Parker’s mentor, your mind immediately goes, this ain’t good. So, I think, you know, in crafting our Norman, I very much want to try to fight that, you know, I think that we’re all coming with a preconceived notion of we know who Norman is, because again, there’s 60 years of character that says this is who Norman is, and just from the second you meet him, our Norman is different. Our Norman has different nuances. He’s got a different take, you know, he’s still got that kind of like the commanding presence and the power of a Norman Osborn, but, you know, in a different way.”
Actor Colman Domingo, on the other hand, confirmed a major aspect of his character's future. In an interview with Josh Horowitz, he confirmed that Norman would indeed transform into the infamous Green Goblin in future seasons. Domingo expressed his hope to play the same character by saying:
"Its [Your Friendly Neighborhood] cool, but I do want to get the live-action out, too. Wouldn't that be kind of cool? I would love to tear that up on the big screen. But I'm having a good time, I love the animation. I love the idea of playing Norman Osborn and you'll see his evolution as the Green Goblin in the coming seasons."
