The third season of Yellowjackets recently came to an entertaining conclusion on Showtime. As of this writing, Yellowjackets hasn't been renewed for a potential fourth season. However, the showrunners as well as members of the cast of Yellowjackets are hopeful that news in this direction might roll out soon, with some of them even hinting at possible storylines and character arcs that could be taken up for development.
Yellowjackets chronicles the events in the aftermath of a plane crash carrying the teenage members of girls high school soccer team. After their plane crashes deep in the Canadian wilderness, the group is forced to fend for themselves. The show often jumps in between the past and the present.
Here's everything that we know.
What's the latest buzz about Yellowjackets season 4?
In the absence of any official confirmation, the fate of the Yellowjackets season remains subject to speculation. While it is known that showrunners Bart Nickerson, Jonathan Lisco, and Ashley Lyle had previously mentioned drawing up the show's arc to last for five seasons, it remains to be confirmed whether Showtime will renew the show or not. Lyle had mentioned to Entertainment Weekly back in March 2023:
"The original plan was about five seasons, and we feel like we’re still on track for that. So far, we’ve been really on track."
Lyle had also spoken to Variety magazine about a potential fourth season featuring the rescue of the characters on the show:
"We do have plans to pivot at some point, but I think everyone’s going to have to watch and see when that might happen.”
When asked about what could be expected from the next season, Lyle answered:
"Melissa is in the wind; the gloves are off; Misty is on a mission. I think that there’s a lot of fun to be had moving forward.”
In a similar vein, actress Sophie Nélisse, who is known for portraying the younger version of Shauna on Yellowjackets, revealed in an interview with The Direct:
"I would like them to be rescued (in season 4). Or maybe like, partially, half (of season 4) is in the wilderness, and then half is them getting back to real life, and I would love to see how they cope with that, having the pressure of family and the media and school, and having to be immersed in like, a normal life after having undergone all of those events.”
Showrunner speaks about the future of the Antler Queen
The third season of the show featured Shauna turning a page to the dark side with her acceptance of her identity as the Antler Queen. When asked about what the future holds for the Antler Queen, Jonatha Lisco revealed to Variety magazine:
"That’s exactly what’s great about a Season 4, actually, and we would love to explore that. It’s interesting, to me at least, that some of the audience is saying, “Wow, Shauna has gone so dark.” And, as Ashley said, the seeds were definitely sowed when she was doing all sorts of things, like killing a rabbit with a shovel — et cetera, et cetera — in the early stages. I feel like the word we used for it the other day was self-imprisonment. She was imprisoning herself in this domestic situation, and she was trying to quash all these impulses for many years, and now they have been unleashed."
Yellowjackets is exclusively available on Showtime.
