While the last episode of What If...? Season 3 feels like the season finale of the final season, the other episodes did introduce a Celestial Agatha and Mega Hulk. That's why viewers are wondering "Will there be a What If...? Season 4?" The simple answer to that question is no. A Marvel executive officially confirmed the status of What If...?

Will there be a What If...? Season 4? Brad Winderbaum confirms the show's fate

In his interview with The Geekcentric Podcast, Brad Winderbaum, who is the Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios confirmed the end of What If...? Firstly, he insisted that the animated series was an anthology series. In the same podcast, he explained how he and his team keep up with every MCU event. He explained:

"We always looked at it as, it's an anthology first and foremost, but that it would have an overarching narrative, especially when it comes to Uatu and his story as the Watcher and his struggle. Even though all three seasons culminate by the finish line, it is a slow burn and kind of keeps that anthological element of the story throughout, but if you look at the final episodes of each season as kind of a Watcher Act 1, Act 2, Act 3, I think it does stand alone as a Watcher story. And in terms of tying to the MCU, we do follow very closely the mythology that’s being set up for the multiverse as the MCU unfolds. Whether it’s kind of the revelation that the multiverse exists or the idea that it’s all now harnessed by Loki sitting in the center of the multiversal tree of stories, or, you know, as will be revealed over time why this was the perfect moment to culminate 'What If…?' in its third season."

Later, in the Phase Hero podcast hosted by Brandon Davis, Winderbaum explained how What If...? and Loki are related, and how the MCU Multiverse Saga plays out. He said:

"Yeah, it will. A good way to put it is, if you remember at the end of 'Loki' Season 1, the Sacred Timeline ruptures and blossoms into alternate realities, and then the next series out was 'What If...?,' where we got to explore those different aspects of the universe. And then, frankly, the end of Season 2, when he shows Peggy the multiverse, it's the Tree of Stories that we know Loki is sitting in the center of. Without going into detail, I think by the time you get to the end of this season, and then over the next couple of years as the Multiverse Saga reaches its exciting conclusion, you will see how it all balances out in a similar way."

Where will Marvel animation go if What If...? is over?

While What If...? ended with the season 3 finale on 29th December 2024, Marvel Animation still has some promising shows in its release schedule. There are three animated shows that are adjacent to the mainstream MCU. The first one is Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which will be released on January 29th, 2025. The second one is Eyes of Wakanda, which involves director Ryan Coogler. The third show is Marvel Zombies, a spin-off of What If...?

Apart from those three, there is also the second season of X-Men'97, which is set in its continuity, rather than MCU. Also, in the closing moments of What If...? Season 3's finale, we get a montage of variants of different Marvel characters. We may probably see some of these variants in the future. These characters are:

  1. Six-Armed Spider-Man
  2. Samurai Ghost Rider
  3. Riri Williams as The Punisher
  4. Bride Gamora
  5. Moon Knight: The Vampire Hunter
  6. Weapon X Thanos
  7. Iron Man Kingo
  8. Kamala Khan as the Wasp
  9. Sorcerer Supreme Maestro
  10. Howard the Scarlet Witch
  11. Dragon Hawkeye
  12. Silver Surfer Jubilee
  13. Skrull Captain America
  14. A dancing Howard Stark and Sersi
  15. A heavily armed Deadpool (probably a reference to Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe)
  16. Queen Hela Odinsdottir
  17. Shang-Chi, who is Star-Lord
  18. Wild West Loki
  19. Infinity Wanda
  20. Nova

Let's hope that we get these wild variants of our favorite Marvel characters. What If...? and the other MCU shows and movies are all available to stream on Disney+.
