At the time, series creator Danny McBride released a statement, saying it was time to wrap up the show as all the major themes and character arcs would reach their natural conclusion in Season 4. He said:

“The Lord spoke to me and said it’s time to wrap this sucker up. The story this season made the themes, ideas, and characters in ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ feel whole and complete.”

“I have loved every second of working with this team for the past eight years, and there are some incredible payoffs, twists, and turns in store over the course of this wild final season.”

Why is The Righteous Gemstones coming to an end?

The show's conclusion seems to be a creative choice made by Danny McBride. In an interview with TVLine, the series creator revealed he was thinking about ending the show even while writing the script for Season 4.

However, he chose to leave the door open for a potential fifth season at the time. As the production of Season 4 progressed, McBride felt assured that it was the right time to end the series on a high note, giving a satisfying conclusion to all the major storylines:

"I wanted to keep an open mind while we were shooting just in case it didn’t feel like that, or [in case we] tanked it and wanted a chance to redo it [in a potential Season 5]. But as we moved through the season, it became aware to me that we had completed what we had set out to do."
