The Residence is a whodunit in the vain of Rian Johnson's Knives Out and Agatha Christie novels. But this Netflix series introduces a Shonda Rhimes twist. This whodunit murder mystery is set within the walls of The White House as the White House Chief Usher A. B. Wynter's body mysteriously dies during a state dinner. Eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp is brought in to analyze this mysterious death.
Considering Wynter's position as the Chief Usher, any one of the members of the White House staff could've killed him. Thus, Cupp and FBI agent Edwin Park have a challenging task ahead of them as they have to identify the guilty ones out of 157 suspects.
“132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world's most famous mansion,” reads the official synopsis.
But now that the series was released almost two days ago, some are wondering if there is a The Residence Season 2.
Will there be The Residence Season 2?
Well, nothing is official for now. Also, it is imperative to note that it's been just two days since The Residence began streaming on Netflix. So, if you want The Residence Season 2, then make sure to recommend it to as many people as possible so that its viewership numbers keep on rising. The higher the viewership number, the higher its chances of getting a renewal.
However, even if it were to be renewed for a second season, would it make sense, considering that the trailer hints at the standalone story? Well, yes. Even if it were a standalone story, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that The Residence can return for a second season.
How can The Residence Season 2 make sense?
Creator Paul William Davies and actors Uzo Aduba (Cordelia Cupp) and Randall Park (agent Edwin Park) sat down for an interview with Deadline on March 13, 2025. In that interview, all three expressed interest in The Residence Season 2. Davies, who is the creator, said this:
“I really love Cordelia Cupp; I really enjoyed coming up with her and writing her. Uzo is amazing. I love the relationship between Cordelia and Edwin. There are lots more stories to tell about her adventures and him with her. We’ll see how people feel about the show but I certainly would be lying if I said I hadn’t thought a lot about it, and didn’t have a lot of ideas about where it could go.”
Based on what he said, it is possible that the creatives behind the series can take inspiration from Rian Johnson's Knives Out movies and tell separate standalone stories with installments of the series while retaining the central detective character. Netflix's Emmy Awards strategy also hints at this possibility.
It was revealed in the same Deadline report that the streaming giant is submitting the series under the comedy category instead of the anthology series or drama categories. Therefore, it won't be surprising if the series receives high viewership numbers and wins big awards. In that case, Netflix could renew The Residence for a season 2.
All eight episodes of The Residence are available to stream on Netflix. Binge them and recommend the series to others if you want a second season.
