The Penguin is a limited DC spin-off series that has been making the rounds lately as the newest addition to Matt Reeves' The Batman universe. It stars Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, following him as he buries his tentacles deep into the nefarious Gotham underworld. The Penguin is part of the recent DC strategy to make its way into primetime television.

Owing to the widespread positive reception and acclaim generated by the HBO show's debut season, speculation is rife among the audience regarding the probability of a second season. Although a definite confirmation for the same is yet to be announced, Colin Farrell and showrunner Lauren LeFranc have both expressed their own opinions regarding a renewal of the show.

It is wise to note that the renewal of a particular show depends upon its performance and the potential it carries for furthering character arcs and subplots. In this respect, since The Penguin is still ongoing and away from its finale, we would have to wait to find out the ultimate score made by the show. Nevertheless, the successive episodes have been ratings winners for HBO.

Here's everything we know.

Colin Farrell speaks his mind about The Penguin Season 2

Colin Farrell delivers a powerful performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin and it is needless to say the meticulous prosthetic work and the emotional underpinnings of playing such a character eventually proved to be quite exhausting for him. While speaking with TotalFilm, he stated that he wasn't sure if he would be able to see himself playing the character once again. He added:

"I don’t know, man. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was b-tching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f*****g wanted it to be finished. I tried to remind them that I had 'grumpy gratitude.' I was still grateful, and still honored, I grew up watching Burgess Meredith, and then Danny DeVito was my Penguin – so being a part of the lineage of that storytelling."

He continued,

"I really did feel privileged. But by the end of it…It's not like I didn't know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and s**t, but…if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren (LeFranc, showrunner) did and what Mike (Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer) did and put them all together, it was a really powerful experience."

The Penguin season 1 showrunner hints at a possible season 2

Despite Farrell's reluctance to reprise the role and the fact that none of the cast of the series has confirmed the possibility of a second season, the showrunner Lauren LeFranc has hinted at the chance of the show being renewed for a probably second season.

While speaking at the New York ComicCon, she remarked that there are several possibilities in terms of stories set that could be explored through the HBO show. She further said:

"Gotham is ripe to tell so many stories, the comics have shown that through decades and decades. I love this version of Gotham too. I love all the characters that we've gotten to explore in this world. I think there's always room for more of that. If the story can be even better, absolutely."

The Penguin Season 1 airs new episodes every Sunday at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
