It seems like The Night Agent on Netflix might be heading in a new story direction, possibly without keeping Gabriel Basso's character, Peter Sutherland, at the heart of it all.

This idea pops up as Basso has been hinting that he might take a step back from his acting career. The showrunner, Shawn Ryan, also sees the show as something that can go in different ways.

Both of them have talked about how The Night Agent could grow and change. Gabriel Basso is working on filming the third season where he brings Peter to life. But he's been saying that he wants to leave the acting world behind at some point.

When he talked to Variety, he mentioned:

“It’ll be sooner than [five or ten years]. The monopoly of youth is energy, and I think I have to convert that into service in order to be legitimate as a person.”

Shawn Ryan's thoughts seem to indicate that he's keen on seeing The Night Agent's main character evolve and explore new territories beyond just acting. In fact, he's mentioned the possibility of Peter getting into stonemasonry and even starting a nonprofit.

Shawn's openness to change is pretty clear when he says,

“The show is called The Night Agent. It’s not called The Gabriel Basso Show.

This gets to the heart of what makes a good story for Gabriel Basso. He believes that a relatable character is crucial.

“No one wants to see someone who’s untouchable,” Basso remarked.

This means keeping Peter's story as real and down-to-earth as possible is key.

What could a new The Night Agent storyline look like?

If the show The Night Agent were to switch things up and follow a new main character, it could broaden its horizon. The first season was pretty loyal to Matthew Quirk's book, but after that, they could go all original and explore new territories.

For example, they could look into the history of Rose's aunt and uncle, who were night agents before her. Or, they could throw in fresh faces, like a newbie agent taking Peter's spot. That way, the series keeps its spy-thriller vibe but gets to play with different relationships and plot twists.

Going with an anthology-style might keep things from getting stale. They'd be able to bring in all sorts of folks with their special talents, reasons for doing what they do, and the issues they have to deal with.

Gabriel Basso’s exit could be a turning point for The Night Agent

Gabriel Basso's portrayal of Peter Sutherland has been a big reason why The Night Agent has done so well, and even though he might leave, it could be the start of an exciting new part of the show.

The people who make the show are into telling good stories more than sticking to a plan, so they might use this to bring in some fresh ideas and keep things from getting too predictable.

This way, they can keep giving viewers some new, not-done plots to watch.

“There may be a time when [Basso] decides he wants to do something else, and there’s a different night agent,” Ryan shared.

This shows that the show has room to grow while being true to what it's about.

Right now, people who love the show can get lost in Peter Sutherland's adventures on The Night Agent on Netflix.
