Contrary to earlier speculation, Shifting Gears has been officially renewed for a second season by ABC. The sitcom is spearheaded by television icon Tim Allen, with the first season opening to positive reviews in general.
Fans of Shifting Gears were apprehensive of the renewal due to the progressively declining reviews in the reception of the episodes from the show's first season. However, it does seem like ABC has given the show a second chance to make its mark on the audience.
Here's all that we know about the upcoming Season 2.
What's the latest buzz about Shifting Gears season 2?
As of now, there's not much news about the production or a potential release date of the sophomore season of Shifting Gears. The debut season did a good job of establishing the premise of the sitcom, which follows Tim Allen's character, Matt, a widower. After several years of estrangement, Matt reunites with his daughter Riley, played by Kat Dennings, who is now a mother of two.
As the season progresses, it is revealed that things have been going downhill for Riley to such an extent that she is without a roof over her head. In order to make ends meet, she, along with her two children, move in with Matt. Consequently, as Riley undergoes an existential crisis and wonders about her purpose in life, Matt tries his best to readjust himself to his new living conditions. What follows is a situational comedy as good as they come.
While the first season of Shifting Gears proved to be rather underwhelming midway through its runtime, it remains to be seen whether the second season will be successful in making amends.
Kat Dennings speaks about Shifting Gears
Kat Dennings has been a familiar face on television ever since almost the last three decades. Apart from being an industry regular, she's also a big fan of veteran Tim Allen. Dennings recently appeared on an exclusive interview with IndieWire during which she shared her own insights about the ABC sit-com:
"I’m not what you call a super positive person, I kind of expect the worst, and then I’m pleasantly surprised. I don’t know. It’s a bad tactic. I need therapy. But I wasn’t expecting this kind of harmony on set.”
She then hinted at the crux of the show:
"It’s representing something that happens in a lot of families, which is somebody has one political view and one set of beliefs and one kind of style, and the other person has the opposite. What does that look like when you love someone, but you disagree with them in so many ways? The answer is comedy, in this case.”
Speaking about Allen, Dennings remarked:
"He’s a little kid inside, of course, he has this kind of gruff exterior. But I had a gruff dad, so for me, this is very familiar territory. I know this kind of person like the back of my hand and it’s a delight for me to be around that again.”
Shifting Gears is exclusively available on ABC.
