While FX's The Old Man wrapped its Season 2 in October 2024, there has been no update for a Season 3. The show's cast was reportedly waiting for any news about the show getting a greenlight for Season 3, but we don't see that happening anytime soon.
In this case, no news is not good news after all, as FX has decided to cancel The Old Man, and the show will not be returning for Season 3.
It seems like bad luck was following the show from its inception as it had multiple obstacles while filming for the two seasons.
This critically acclaimed show is based on Thomas Perry's novel of the same name and follows the story of a retired CIA agent, Dan Chase, whose peaceful life is disturbed when an intruder enters his house, and his cover is blown. Now, Chase must reconcile with his past.
The show stars Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman, and Alia Shawkat in the titular roles.
More on the reasons behind The Old Man's cancelation in our story.
FX's The Old Man is canceled after two seasons
The Old Man Season 1 production began in 2019 but was shut down just before three episodes were left filming. While this was mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was also reported that Bridges was diagnosed with cancer, and the shooting had to halt because he went for cancer treatment.
This delayed the production, and the show finally aired its Season 1 in June 2022. But it was all worth it, as the show received critical acclaim and also scored the most-watched cable series premiere since January 2021. The premiere also became the most-watched debut on Hulu.
Following this success, the show was renewed for Season 2 but took almost two years and three months to air in September 2024. This was mainly due to the Hollywood Writer's strike, and it majorly affected the ratings for Season 2.
While The Old Man Season 2 was a hit among the critics, it failed to draw the audience back after a long gap from Season 1.
Considering the low ratings and production delays, FX canceled the show and it will not return for Season 3.
How did The Old Man Season 2 end?
While Season 2 did not end with jaw-dropping suspense, it still had plenty of room for The Old Man Season 3, which will sadly not be happening now.
After ambushing Pavlovich's place, Zoe and Carson take him out but keep one man alive to know Dan's location, which is in an abandoned cathedral.
However, when they reach the cathedral, Dan is barely breathing, and Zoe injects three doses of the antidote, which does not seem to be working on him. He is finally revived when she gives him CPR.
The two are finally living quietly in a safe house when Dan receives a flip phone and a number that he calls from a nearby pay phone. Turns out it was Emily (who everybody thought was dead), trying to contact her father.
Their emotional reunion is cut short when Emily asks his father to find out Lou Barlow (one of Dan's aliases) to help get Harper. Dan comes clean about his Lou identity, and Emily asks her father to access that identity to help save Harper.
While Dan does not want to be Lou again, suddenly, cars pull up to take them for their mission to save Harper, and he realizes that he has no choice now, and the episode ends.
