NBC's procedural The Irrational finally wrapped its Season 2 finale on March 25, 2025, and fans are already wondering about the show's future.
The show, which debuted in 2023, follows Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin), a professor of behavioral psychology who helps police in high-profile cases through his interest in and knowledge of the human mind and its behavioral patterns.
The Season 2 finale saw Alec embroiled in international espionage, where he got involved in an international prisoner exchange between Russia and the US.
While NBC has not yet renewed The Irrational for Season 3, the Season 2 finale ends on a cliffhanger for the main character, which might hint at the chance for further seasons. However, it remains to be seen whether the show will return for a third installment.
More on The Irrational in our story.
The Irrational Season 3 is not confirmed yet
While The Irrational Season 1 was a success among the viewers, which made its sophomore outing possible, it is difficult to say if the show will receive the same fate for the third chapter.
Since season revivals are largely based on the previous season's numbers and reviews, especially the finale, it is difficult to determine the procedural's chances for a revival.
Talking about premiere numbers, Season 1 garnered 3.81 million viewers in September 2023, which went down slightly to 3.09 million viewers for the Season 2 premiere. While the decrease might concern the show's future, all eyes are on the recently released Season 2 finale, which will reveal the fate of The Irrational Season 3.
The sophomore year is also crucial for NBC procedurals like The Irrational, as it will firmly indicate where the show stands regarding numbers and reviews. Season 1 largely benefited from NBC's fall strike in 2023, when the network had to hold back many of its popular shows to make way for new procedurals.
Season 2 finale ratings will prove whether the show is capable of maintaining its individual standing and the chances that the network might revive it for a third season.
The Irrational Season 2 finale ends on a cliffhanger
While NBC is yet to renew the show for a third season, it looks like showrunner Arika Mittman is keen on exploring the third chapter, which is why, while the Season 2 finale tied most loose ends, the last 30 seconds introduced a potential for Season 3.
After making peace with the fact that he will no longer have surgery and embracing the second life he got after the explosion, Alec receives pictures of himself on his mobile, hinting at danger or a potential stalker.
When asked who this mysterious stalker could be, Mittman gave a cryptic reply in an interview with ScreenRant:
''You have to tell NBC to give us a season 3. If we have a season 3, we can answer that question. I have some ideas, but I want to get all the writers back in the room to find the best version of that story.''
While Mittman was tight-lipped about the Season 2 ending, it is clear that, should NBC renew it, there is potential for another season. Fans will have to wait until the network has updates on the show's future.
