Since its first season, Big Little Lies has been a hit dark comedy on HBO, featuring a star-studded cast of actresses. The show first premiered in 2017 and quickly became popular among fans who love watching themes of friendship, motherhood, and societal expectations, and exploring how women fall victim to abuse.

From Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman to Legally Blonde star Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies follows five intriguing women, each with their own problems in life. The story began with a startling murder at a school fundraiser, uncovering the past and connection of these women residing in Monterey, California.

Anticipation is high for the third chapter, as there has been a tease not only from Kidman but Witherspoon as well. Is Big Little Lies returning for season 3?

Yes, there are high possibilities of Big Little Lies making its way back to HBO, since both, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have shared positive updates about their show. During an interview with E News! this month, The Morning Show star revealed her excitement and hinted at the plan for Big Little Lies Season 3. Witherspoon said:

"We're in waiting for Liane Moriarty. She's going to be turning in something very soon. We're back to the original author, and we're going to go back to the original characters."

The actress also mentioned the kids getting older, which means there's a fresh narrative and more engaging element in the potential season 3. Big Little Lies follows the story penned by Liane Moriarty and was initially set to have just one season.

However, its success and recognition at the Emmy Awards highlighted the HBO series' compelling story which was expanded in the second chapter which came out in 2019.

During a Q&A session with Variety, Kidman also teased working on another season, saying "There's a timeline and we're doing it". The Perfect Couple star also mentioned the process going "fast and furious" while speaking to Vanity Fair in June 2024.


Will the main characters return for Big Little Lies Season 3?

HBO hasn't shared any official update on season 3, but following what the cast members and producers said, fans will likely get to see the main characters back on the screens. As previously mentioned, the titular women's connection comes to light after a murder, followed by dark secrets being discovered.

The key characters include Madeline Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman), Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley), Renata Klein (Laura Dern), and Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz). While these actresses have taken on the bigger part of the series, supporting actors like Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling, and others contribute to adding depth and advancing the plot.

One of the cast members Shailene Woodley also shared her excitement for season 3 during a 2021 interview, especially to see the children from the previous season as teenagers now. Their lives will change as they navigate the challenges of getting older and becoming wiser.

Woodley also mentioned losing their talented director Jean-Marc Vallée who passed away in 2021 due to cardiac arrhythmia at the age of 58. The filmmaker has been behind many acclaimed TV series including Young Victoria, Dallas Buyers Club, Demolition, and many more.
