Netflix's latest show, American Primeval, premiered on January 9, 2025, with all 6 episodes released at once. The show has already been garnering much attention, owing to its violent and gritty portrayal of the 1857 American West, a tough time that saw massive clashes among the native Americans, the heavily religious Mormons, and the white settlers.
Since all the episodes of the show dropped together, fans are now already waiting for updates on the second season. However, American Primeval has been branded as a limited series, so the show will likely have only one season.
While Netflix has not officially confirmed anything about the future of the show, director Peter Berg told Decider that he has thought of "ways that we could go" for a potential season 2. Let us now explore in detail the chances of American Primeval coming back for a second season along with what the director Peter Berg thinks about the same.
Will there be a Season 2 of American Primeval?
As previously mentioned, American Primeval has been branded as a limited series and that means having a single season suffices its purposes. However, judging by Netflix’s history of renewing shows, it can’t be said with certainty that just because American Primeval is a limited series, it won’t be renewed for a second season. Based on this season's reviews and ratings, the series can come back for another season.
Peter Berg, the director of American Primeval, talked to Decider about the chances of the series’ renewal and mentioned,
“You know, after we wrapped and I looked at all the actors — the ones that were still alive — I felt such affection for them,"
He added,
"And I do think there are many ways that we could go."
This shows that he might already have ideas about how the next season can happen and what storyline it would follow. Netflix has not yet released any official statement regarding the renewal of the show and unless the streamer confirms something, nothing can be said for certain.
What happens in American Primeval?
American Primeval follows Sara and her son Devon as they try to make their journey to the West while also keeping safe from Vigil and his group of goons along with the Mormons who attacked them in the first episode of the show.
With the help of Issac and Two Moons, Sara and Devon remain alive till the end of the show and start their journey to California. Two Moons also accompany them but Issac gets shot and dies.
The story ends with the main storyline of Sara and her son coming to a rounded end. The fate of the Fort Bridger also comes to a definitive end as Brigham Young, along with the Mormon community burn it down after taking the ownership.
American Primeval has an ensemble cast including Betty Gilpin as Sara, Saura Lightfoot-Leon as Abish Pratt, Kim Coates as Brigham Young, Preston Mota as Devin, Shea Whigham as Jim Bridger, Jai Courtney as Virgil, Taylor Kitsch as Isaac, and Dane DeHaan as Jacob among others.
