Netflix's new sports comedy series, Running Point Season 1, dropped on February 27, 2025. Created by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and Elaine Ko, the show features Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, who takes on the charge of her family's pro basketball team as president.
With an average of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, the premiere season of Running Point was well received. However, fans will have to wait longer than anticipated for news on renewal as Running Point Season 2 has not been officially confirmed.
Running Point is based on the real life story of Jeanie Buss, the primary owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. The series follows Isla Gordon's Kate Hudson. After her brother, Cam, finds himself in the middle of a scandal and sent to rehab, Isla becomes the president of the Los Angeles Waves (her family's basketball team). She faces sexism while trying to save the struggling team. Moreover, her siblings believe that she is not capable of handling the team.
Cast of Running Point on a possible Season 2
Even though there is no official confirmation from Netflix for Running Point Season 2, the actors and show creators are hoping for its return. If confirmed, fans have to wait for at least 2026 or 2027 for Running Point Season 2.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kate Hudson opened up about playing Isla Gordon, she said,
"I just had so much fun doing this. I want to keep doing it"
Co-creator Mindy Kaling continued,
"This is a message to Ted Sarandos (Netflix CEO), we want to keep doing the show and pick like five more seasons. I mean it really was such a dream, I mean I'm behind camera on this, but writing for Kate, for Brenda, and having them nail these jokes, its just made our life so easy."
In an interview with Decider, Jay Ellis, who plays Jay Brown, the coach for the Los Angeles Waves, opened up about the chances of an upcoming season, he said,
"We all hope there's a Season 2, for sure. We'd be excited to work together again."
MacArthur, who plays Ness Gordon, Waves general manager and Isla's brother, told Decider,
"I think this world is built to run. It's big, it's expansive. For that reason I think there's a lot of storylines and emotional arcs that we get to follow in Season 1."
He added:
"And I think if there were more stories to tell, we’ll just keep exploring these relationships because each time the characters are in different combinations, there are new colors in new light. I think that would be just a lot of fun because there’s a lot there.”
Running Point Season 1 ending
After facing numerous challenges throughout the season, Isla Gordon, played by Kate Hudson, finally leads the Waves to game seven of the playoffs. However, they unexpectedly lose.
On the other hand, Isla seems to suffer in her personal life too as her finance Lev Levenson moves out of the apartment and does not attend her important games. This leaves Isla quite heartbroken and devastated. In an empty stadium, Isla feels emotionally vulnerable as she shares a moment with coach Jay Brown, which leads to a kiss.
When Isla returns to her office at the Waves headquarters, she finds her brother and ex-President of Waves, Cam (Justin Theroux). Cam, after spending his time in the rehab, is back to take his old position. The ending of the season teases a tension between the Gordon siblings, Cam and Isla, for the role of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team's president.
Meanwhile, Travis Bugg remains in the rehab while Jackie is embraced by the Gordon family. Sandy (Drew Tarver) reconciles with his ex while the Waves starts prepping for the next season.
