Among the most popular period fantasy shows nowadays is Renegade Nell. Sally Wainwright developed it, and it first showed on Disney+ on March 29, 2024. It centers on Nell Jackson, a supernatural power-bearing highwaywoman from the eighteenth century. The program weaves mysticism, action, and history.

After just one season, Disney+ formally canceled the show despite its interesting storyline and great critical reception. Many fans were excited to see how the narrative would develop in a second season, so this choice disappointed them.

Although there were first talks about a possible second installment, no official intentions for such have been verified. The program is still accessible for streaming, but at this moment Disney+ or any other platform does not have renewal plans.

More about the possibility of Renegade Nell Season 2

When Renegade Nell first premiered, it was introduced as one of Disney+ UK’s high-profile original productions. Written by Wainwright and best known for Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack, the series promised an adventurous mix of historical intrigue and magical realism.

The first season consisted of eight episodes, following Nell Jackson’s transformation from a framed fugitive to a legendary outlaw aided by a mischievous sprite named Billy Blind. In the weeks following its release, speculation about a second season arose.

Billy assists Nell in defeating the Earl of Poynton in the Renegade Nell finale. She comes home with her sisters after being exonerated of all accusations. Nevertheless, Sofia and Thomas get it through, suggesting that their sinister sorcery may bring up fresh perils in a potential sequel.

In addition to this, even the director Ben Taylor revealed in an interview with Radio Times in late March 2024 that the team was already working on a potential second season script. However, despite these early discussions, Disney+ officially announced on July 30, 2024, that the series would not be renewed for a second season.

The primary reason for the cancellation appears to be viewership metrics. While Disney+ did not release specific numbers, reports suggest that the series did not meet the platform’s internal performance benchmarks. Given Disney’s focus on cutting costs and restructuring its content strategy, lower-performing originals have been subject to cancellation, and Renegade Nell became one of them.

Despite Disney+ dropping the show, there is always a possibility that another network or streaming service could pick it up. However, as of now, no official plans for revival have been announced.
