As Percy tricks Ripley and Orthax into a black powder explosion, it leaves the former in a vulnerable position, making Ripley a one-shot kill.

Ripley also knows this and says to Percy,

“Always clever, Percival, and now revenge is yours. You can watch me burn.”

However, Percy chooses to show empathy to Ripley. Since Ripley’s actions have affected so many lives on the show besides Percy’s, it seemed unfair for Percy to take revenge on his own instead of trying to serve real justice.

This decision to show mercy to Ripley proves fatal for Percy. Ripley takes her chance of shooting Percy instead of taking mercy and the group later finds his body at the end of the 7th episode.

Percy’s death marks the most devastating ending of any episode so far.

Percy’s death sends an intense emotional shock throughout the party. However, there was a similar moment in the campaign where the party quickly took Percy to a temple and brought him back to life.

In the show, however, he seems to be remaining dead. As mentioned by Polygon, Laura Bailey, the voice of half-elf ranger Vex’ahlia explains,

“In the campaign, we were able to bring him back very quickly, but I think that can be something that loses its gravity if you’re constantly able to revive somebody who has died over and over again. So in order to make us sit with it and experience that grief, I think it needed to be extended.”

Travis Willingham, who plays the character of barbarian Grog and is also a writer for the show, mentioned,

“We wanted death to feel consequential. We wanted it to have weight, otherwise it would just feel flighty and not a big deal if a character goes down. And so this was really a time to get a gut check about what is important around these characters and really how fragile they can be and how temporary some of this stuff is, if you’re not careful.”

Percy’s death felt raw and more damaging than the other heavy moments in the show as those had been played by the team in some version before the actual play campaign.

However, no matter how perfect this death seems for Percy’s arc, fans are quite certain that the character will be brought back. One reddit user named HetIsJeBoiLuuk mentioned,

“I definitely think they're bringing him back at the end of the season, probably after they've dealt with Ripley but I don't know how they're going to do it. My guess is either the Everlight or Raven Queen will help them somehow.
Either way there's no way they're leaving Percy dead for good, he's too important of a character for the future of that world.”

Another user, meatsmoothie82, supported this, saying,

“I think you’re right- they might use cabals ruin somehow after they get it from Ripley. I’m loving the divergence from the campaign- it feels like a whole new show with familiar characters and has me hooked.”

However, with no official update on the character’s fate, it remains to be seen what the makers have planned to do with Percy.

The Legends of the Vox Machina can be streamed on Prime Video.
