While The Last of Us Season 2 is a huge hit among the audience, Pedro Pascal might not be able to compete for an Emmy nomination for Lead or Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

The issue is not with his performance. Pascal’s performance as Joe Miller, in just the first two episodes of The Last of Us Season 2, has won hearts. But he is also no longer a lead in the show, given his demise in the second episode, Through the Valley.

Pedro Pascal’s strong performance in season one earned him major praise from fans and critics alike and even got him an Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2023. With The Last of Us Season 2 being released, many are wondering if he’ll be nominated again and in which category.

Is an Emmy on the way for Pedro Pascal’s The Last of Us Season 2 performance?

At the moment, HBO has not officially announced whether Pedro Pascal will be submitted in the Lead or Supporting category for the 2025 Emmy Awards. Since his character is no longer part of the present storyline after the second episode of The Last of Us Season 2, it would seem logical to place him in the Supporting category. Besides, he is going to appear in flashbacks, giving him sufficient screen time.

In 2023, Pedro Pascal was nominated in the Lead category for an Emmy for The Last of Us season one and received critical appreciation for his portrayal of Joel. He also won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series, proving his artistic capability. That recognition could influence HBO’s decision and give Pascal another shot at a Lead Actor nomination for The Last of Us Season 2, even if he appears in fewer episodes this season.

Many might think that Pedro Pascal could be placed in the Guest Actor category, but a new Emmy rule has made that impossible. The Television Academy has introduced a new rule that actors previously nominated or awarded in Lead or Supporting roles for a specific character in a series can no longer compete in the Guest category for that same role in later seasons.

The new season has been well-received overall. According to early reviews, The Last of Us Season 2 holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Much of the praise has gone to the new cast members, especially Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. However, Pascal’s presence through memories and flashbacks would be crucial in driving the season’s story.

It’s worth noting that award nominations often take more than just screen time into account. The impact a character has on the story and the performance quality can sometimes matter even more than screen time. Joel’s journey and legacy continue to shape the characters and events of The Last of Us Season 2, and Pedro Pascal’s ability to make that connection felt, even through limited appearances, could strengthen his case for another Emmy run.

With the Emmy deadline getting closer, a decision will need to be made by 8th May 2025. Whether Pedro Pascal ends up in the Lead or Supporting category, his work in The Last of Us continues to be praised as some of the best on television.
