February 21, 2025, was a special day for fans of the iconic and beloved Nickelodeon franchise Avatar: The Last Airbender, as it marked the 20th anniversary of the animated series' premiere on Nickelodeon in 2005. However, just a day before, it was announced that Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the showrunners of the original series, were returning to this universe with a sequel series titled Avatar: Seven Havens.
In this fictional universe, there are people called "benders" who can control one of the four elements: fire, water, air, and Earth. However, only one bender can control all the elements, and that bender is referred to as the "Avatar," who is born once per cycle. The birth of each Avatar follows a specific pattern: water, Earth, fire, and air.
So, if an Avatar is born in a Fire Nation, the next one will be born among the Air Nomads. The original series revolved around an Airbender, The Legend of Korra, the sequel series, followed Korra, a Waterbender, and Seven Havens is set to follow an Earthbender. The official logline for the upcoming animated series reads:
“A world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.”
The Avatar Cycle explained:
Fans of Avatar are familiar with the opening narration that plays in every episode of the original series from the second episode onward. It goes like this:
"Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world."
The very first words of the opening narration establish the order of the Avatar Cycle. One cycle ended with Aang, and a new one began with Korra. After her, the next Avatar is born in the Earth Kingdom. However, the new series will likely be darker than either The Last Airbender or The Legend of Korra, as this new Avatar’s status supposedly marks her as humanity’s destroyer instead of its savior.
The original animated series began with the last element in the Avatar Cycle, but The Legend of Korra followed Korra, a Waterbender. The next series will be headlined by an Earthbender. However, there is one element that has yet to be the main focus of a series: fire. While we did get Roku, Aang’s predecessor, in the original animated series, we have yet to see a Firebender Avatar as the protagonist.
If the creators continue following the cycle, we will likely get another sequel series after the conclusion of Seven Havens. However, it should be noted that this may take some time. The Legend of Korra aired its last episode almost ten years ago on December 19, 2014. However, her storyline continued in the form of comics. It has taken an entire decade to move on to the next Avatar in the cycle.
Apart from the upcoming series, we are also getting a movie titled Aang: The Last Airbender, scheduled to be released on January 30, 2026. So, even if a sequel series headlining a Firebender were to happen, it would likely take some time.
Do you believe that there will be another Avatar sequel series after Seven Havens? If so, how long do you think it will take?
