NCIS: Origins has earned a dedicated fan following in a short span of time. The CBS police procedural drama is a prequel to NCIS with enough original mystery, action, and thrill to make it stand out.
The show delves into the origin story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the fan-favorite Special Agent on NCIS. Austin Stowell plays Gibbs in the prequel, portraying how the agent handles his early days in the Naval Investigative Service while dealing with the death of his wife and daughter.
The show has so far aired 10 episodes, and is on a mid-season break. In the meantime, fans cannot help but wonder if NCIS: Origins will have a Season 2. While the series has not been officially renewed by CBS, co-showrunner David J. North has given a positive update.
Will NCIS: Origins have a second season?
As of now, CBS has not renewed NCIS: Origins for Season 2. However, the first season is still on air and the network might announce the continuation of the show in due time.
The series has consistently garnered good ratings since its premiere on October 14, 2024, and remains among the top 10 shows on the streaming platform Paramount+, which boosts its chances of a renewal.
David J. North, who created the show with Gina Lucita Monreal and serves as the co-showrunner, has also shared a positive update about the potential second season. In an interview with TV Line, North revealed CBS and Paramount+ are already looking at a long-term association with NCIS: Origins. He said:
“We’re really proud of what we’re making, and the goal is always, obviously, to get as many eyes on it as possible. I know that we’re doing well on Paramount+; after we air, the following day we’re always in the Top 10.”
“I do know that CBS and Paramount are in it for the long haul, so we just try to keep our heads down and write as good of material as possible. And this cast, they’re fantastic, they really are. I think we have something special here, and I hope everybody comes on board.”
There's another thing that works in favor of the series getting a second season: CBS had initially given NCIS: Origins a 13-episode run in its first season but, seeing the audience response, extended it to a full-season order of 18 episodes within a month of the series premiere.
CBS has already shown its faith in the drama, and would likely garnt a second season. We need to wait for an official confirmation.
When will NCIS: Origins season 2 be released?
Contrary to streaming platforms that are known to keep the audience waiting for years, television networks still follow a yearly broadcast schedule. CBS usually drops new seasons of its shows in the fall.
If NCIS: Origins Season 2 is greenlit in the upcoming months, it can be expected to premiere in the fall of 2025. Like the first season, the second installment might also debut in the month of October.
Who will star in NCIS: Origins season 2?
Since the series has not been renewed yet, the star cast of a possible second season is not confirmed. However, the main cast members can be expected to reprise their roles, as the show would be incomplete without the iconic performances of Austin Stowell, Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, and Diany Rodriguez.
The characters these actors play in the show are:
- Austin Stowell as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs
- Kyle Schmid as Special Agent Mike Franks
- Mariel Molino as Special Agent Lala Dominguez
- Tyla Abercrumbie as Officer Mary Jo Hayes
- Diany Rodriguez as Special Agent Vera Stricklan
NCIS: Origins Season 1 will return on CBS on January 27, 2025.
