Fans are waiting for news about Murder in a Small Town Season 2, but it is still clear what will happen. Fox has not renewed or canceled the crime drama, so it is uncertain. Executive producer Jeff Wachtel said that the creative team is already thinking of ideas for the next season.
Wachtel said that the scripts of four episodes are totally ready, and outlines of additional episodes are under work. While it has exciting stories and interesting characters, the show is not as yet among the top 25 most-watched programs of Fall 2024, which brings forth concerns in terms of what will follow.
Murder in a Small Town Season 1 received good reviews with a Rotten Tomatoes 70% score and from the viewers 73%, the show also experienced immense growth across all platforms such that the number of viewers rose by 130%.
Although it appears Fox does not include it in the winter schedule, folks expect maybe new schedule announcements would be included.
What do the fans expect from Murder in a Small Town Season 2?
Jeff Wachtel teased major developments for the show's central characters and storylines should the series return. Protagonist Karl Alberg, played by Rossif Sutherland, will see his professional responsibilities expand.
The show also tries to see Karl's sad past, particularly his bond with his dead artist mother. This connection affects his crime-solving ability, which is seeing the world artistically. Kristin Kreuk's character, Cassandra, will have interesting storylines as well, like her political campaign and possibly having problems on the job with Karl.
Wachtel mentioned a new enemy may appear—the mayor whose tricky plans change how the town works.
While Season 2 will have a season-long mystery of multiple interconnected murders, it won't revisit the serial killer theme of the first season. Instead, the writers are working on a layered, long-term storyline focusing on solving decade-old unsolved cases.
Wachtel noted, “It’s a bit of a surprise who the baddie is.”
Issues and triumphs of Murder in a Small Town season 1
Even though the ending was great and the acting superb, Murder in a Small Town has stiffer competition. The initial episode drew 2.285 million viewers, and it wasn't easy to get this show into the top 25 shows for Fall 2024.
Its popularity on Hulu is a good thing, making it Fox's #1 new show and #3 overall on the streaming platform for the 2024-2025 TV season. Producers are playing strong moves on lead actors Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk.
Wachtel also praised their performances:
“We felt the surprise element of the show…was their relationship.”
This combination, along with its mix of regular parts of a crime story and emotional feelings, continues to appeal to viewers.
Will Murder in a Small Town return for Season 2?
Renewal prospects for Murder in a Small Town will depend on several factors, such as viewership growth on streaming platforms and Fox's broader programming needs. This would raise the chances of its return for loyal fans and their good reviews, but being left out of Fox's winter schedule makes one wonder.
According to CinemaBlend, Fox has allocated the money for script development, which shows the network wants to keep the story going. Fans are waiting for an official statement to come, with the possible release date in 2025.
