Creature Commandos has kicked off the DCU with a bang. The Max adult animated series premiered on December 5, 2024, and has so far impressed the fans with its fresh take on the DC lore, giving the franchise a much-needed revival.
The show follows a black ops team of monsters who get a free hand to destroy extraordinary villains by any means. The third episode of the show, titled Cheers to the Tin Man, has teased that another coveted DC team, the Metal Men, could be a part of the franchise soon.
Metal Men are robotic superheroes, with each individual representing a different metal from the periodic table. Creature Commandos episode 3 offers a glimpse at the early designs of these robots, created by scientist Dr. Will Magnus.
Creature Commandos teases the introduction of the Metal Men
Creature Commandos episode 3 centers around G.I. Robot, voiced by Sean Gunn. Originally designed to target Nazis during World War II, G.I. Robot is later given to the US Army and eventually lands with the scientist Dr. Will Magnus, played by Alan Tudyk.
The robot is handed over to Dr. Will so that he can study it and create a new set of robotic creatures. During a conversation with G.I. Robot, Dr. Will showcases his invention plans on a chalkboard. Interestingly, the board also features designs of the Metal Men, teasing their addition to the DCU.
However, it is not yet confirmed if and whether the Metal Men will be made a part of Creature Commandos, or get their own series or film. The Metal Men are a team of robots, each with powers based on a specific metal, like gold, iron, and mercury.
They have unique and fun personalities, which would be a change from the darker tone of characters in Creature Commandos and The Suicide Squad. The Metal Men could fit perfectly with the family-friendly style of upcoming DCU projects, like the live-action film Superman: Legacy.
Metal Men is a robotic superhero team
The Metal Men are a team of advanced robots in DC Comics created by Dr. Will Magnus. They first appeared in the comic Showcase #37 in 1962. Each member of the team is based on a specific metal and given unique abilities and personalities by the Responsometer, a device invented by Magnus.
The team includes six members, Gold, Platinum, Iron, Lead, Mercury, and Tin. Gold is the leader, known for his calm demeanor and strategic thinking. Platinum is a shape-shifter who believes she is human and has a romantic attachment to Dr. Will.
Iron is the team’s strongest member, while Lead is slow-witted but loyal and shields others from radiation. Mercury is hot-tempered and able to transform into liquid metal, and Tin is shy and self-conscious but can reshape his body when needed.
The Metal Men fight various enemies, including mad scientists, aliens, and supervillains, while also bringing humor and emotional depth to the stories. Though their original comic series was canceled in the 1970s, they have remained part of the DC Universe, occasionally appearing in other comics.
DCU co-head James Gunn wants to create a project based on the Metal Men
The Metal Men’s cameo in Creature Commandos does not come as a surprise, as DCU co-head James Gunn had already expressed his interest in creating a project around the superheroes back in 2022.
Following the release of episode 3, series creator Gunn revealed the Metal Men was his favorite DC group while growing up. He said in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes:
“Dr. Will Magnus was the creator of the Metal Man which was my favorite group when I was a child. I think that we're being able to set up that Dr. Magnus was definitely inspired and learned something from the Automaton that is G.I Robot that leads him to creating the Metal Man down the road.”
Considering Gunn’s interest in the project and the Metal Men's cameo in Creature Commandos, the robot team could make its live-action or animated debut in the DCU in the future.
New episodes of Creature Commandos are released on Max on Thursdays.
