9-1-1 season 8 has gone on a mid-season break after airing eight thrilling episodes. The police procedural drama, which revolves around the lives of first responders based in Los Angeles, features several fascinating characters that have built an emotional connection with the audience over the years.
One of them is Maddie Han, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, who joined the show in the second season. One of the most heartbreaking, yet inspiring, plots in the show was centered around her.
However, Maddie took a backseat in the first part of 9-1-1 season 8, and the narrative started focusing on her family life as she got pregnant. While fans thought Maddie would be back in action in season 8 part 2, actress Jennifer is busy shooting for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel.
Many thought this would cast a shadow on Maddie’s return in the second part of 9-1-1 season 8, as there would be scheduling conflicts between the shoot of the show and her upcoming film. However, Jennifer has already shot for the next few episodes of the show, and hence, will be back in 9-1-1 after the mid-season break.
Maddie will be back in 9-1-1 season 8 part 2
Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt had her breakout role in the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer. She played Julie James, the survivor in the slasher horror film and its 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
On December 13, 2024, it was announced that Jennifer would be reprising her role as Julie James in a yet-untitled sequel of the horror franchise, which is slated to be released in theaters on July 18, 2025. The filming of the show began on December 3, 2024.
This made 9-1-1 fans worried about Maddie’s future in the show, as they thought the filming timeline of season 8 part 2 could clash with that of Jennifer’s next film. However, the actress confirmed in an interview that she has filmed for her upcoming storyline in 9-1-1 season 8.
Following the mid-season finale, a teaser for the second part was released, which shows Maddie being abducted. Jennifer revealed on a podcast that the scenes involving the abduction arc were difficult to film, confirming her future in the show. She said on the I've Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario podcast:
“[It is] the craziest thing I’ve ever done on 9-1-1. That’s all I can say. The audience is not ready. I was not ready. My voice is kind of out; it has been this way since we filmed it. It’s wild but it was so fun. I can’t wait for people to see it.”
Hence, Maddie continues to be a key character on the show, who will be seen in 9-1-1 season 8 part 2.
Maddie’s story so far in 9-1-1 season 8
Maddie goes through a rollercoaster of emotions in the first part of the season. She finds out that she is pregnant with her second child and feels excited about it; however, her husband, Chimney is nervous, considering she went through postpartum depression the first time.
But Maddie chooses to stay positive, knowing that this time they are better prepared. She believes they now have the experience and tools to face every challenge, unlike their first pregnancy, where everything felt overwhelming.
Maddie’s brother, Buck, gets to know about her pregnancy during a family dinner. Maddie avoids wine and baked brie during dinner, which gives Buck enough clues to figure out she is going to be a mother again.
While Maddie tries to explain why she did not tell him sooner, Chim bluntly admits it is because Buck is a blabbermouth. Buck is thrilled by the news, and the siblings share a heartfelt moment. Maddie and Chim then have a much-needed date night. However, the happy times may not last long as Maddie is going to be kidnapped.
9-1-1 season 8 will return on ABC on March 6, 2025.
