In a rare twist of fate, the second season of Like Water For Chocolate has been greenlit by Max even before the debut season ended its run. Like Water For Chocolate is based on the eponymous Spanish novel by author Laura Esquivel. It combines elements of magic realism with gastronomic expression. The story revolves around two star-crossed lovers, Tita and Pedro, united by love but divided by fate. The ups and downs of their romance take place against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution.

Like Water For Chocolate is considered one of the most important Spanish language novels. The popularity of the work was emphasized when a 1992 film adaptation went on to become the highest-grossing foreign film in the US at that time.

Owing to restrictions of the film format, several key aspects of Esquivel's vision had to be omitted. However, the Max adaptation suffers from none of these faults and, therefore, is faithful to the source material.

Here's everything we know about the upcoming second season.

Max has officially renewed Like Water For Chocolate for a second season

Although the first season of Like Water For Chocolate is yet to reach its finale, the second season has already been commissoned by Max. Salma Hayek Pinault will once again be returning as the producer and has further hinted that the show won't stretch beyond the second season. The decision was announced earlier this month at the steaming platform's showcase in London, where Hayek Pinault commented:

"We don’t want to do more than two. We want to do something that’s really special, and (make sure) that we don’t water it down to try and make it longer.”

The show indeed holds a special place in Hayek Pinault's heart, as in an earlier interview with Variety prior to the release of the debut season, she mentioned:

"Like Water for Chocolate’ is a true jewel of Latin American literature and film. I wanted to find a new place and way to tell this story, so that a new generation can discover it and the people who already have a relationship with the story can rediscover it in a new format."

With a second season in the works, it can be guessed that the producers have decided on a two-part adaptation of the novel, with the second season being devoted to the second half of the source material.

Mariano Cesar of Warner Bros. Discovery gave out the following statement via TVLine in this regard:

"This second season of the series will complete the story, fusing essential aspects of Mexican culture, such as magical realism and gastronomy, acting as forms of expression and connection. These themes are developed from a female perspective, in which the questioning of social and family mandates reinforces the current relevance of the narrative."
