Lawmen: Bass Reeves proved to be another smashing hit when it premiered on November 5, 2023. The TV series was created by Chad Feehan and produced by David Oyelowo, Taylor Sheridan, Jessica Oyelowo, and Dennis Quaid.
Going along with Sheridan’s brand of Western storytelling, Lawmen: Bass Reeves followed the eponymous lawman who became the first Black deputy U.S. Marshall to serve west of the Mississippi River.
The titular character, Bass Reeves, played by David Oyelowo, had a career spanning over 30 years, and he arrested thousands of felons and outlaws without ever sustaining a serious injury himself.
As his life and story captivated both the fans and critics, Oyelowo told Entertainment Weekly,
“I really hope people come away [with], and have a reframing and an acceptance of, the fact that even though it was under duress, Black people were so instrumental in building this country."
He continued:
"I really hope that, especially as we get so many slave narratives in this period, this is one of empowerment—literally—this man is empowered, and he takes that power and he uses it for the good of his community and his country. And that's really what I hope people are left with at the end of the show."
Initially planned as a spin-off of the Yellowstone universe, Lawmen: Bass Reeves was eventually confirmed to exist separately in its own timeline, different from Sheridan's other hit franchise.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves moves between fiction and history as it brings to life a true story with touches of Sheridan’s impeccable skills. Since the series was well received by critics, the possibility of a season 2 of the show cannot be completely disregarded.

Is Lawmen: Bass Reeves season 2 in the works?
Though there is a potential for a second season of Lawmen, it seems that the series will be in anthology format, and the next season, if it happens, will follow a different lawman than Reeves.
While there is still no confirmation on season 2, creator Chad Feehan mentioned,
“If there is another season of Lawmen, it will focus on a new lawman or law woman. There are several figures in history much like Bass who deserve their day in the sun. As much as it pains me that this marriage is taking a hiatus, that is the reality.”
This comment shows that they are trying to put an emphasis on the unsung heroes of history, as Feehan wants to move away from Reeves and talk about other characters if he is given a chance to create new episodes.
On the other hand, Damian Marcano, the director of the show, mentioned that while David Oyelowo has set a standard too high for anyone to play the next lawman, they would love to take the series forward. He said:
“I would love for it to be… I thoroughly fell in love with the subject matter, and with our filming location…Obviously, as of this point, it is an anthology series that will sort of cover a different lawman each series but David Oyelowo has definitely set the bar high for wherever we go from this point.”
Therefore, with the creative heads agreeing on an anthology series, it remains to be seen which new Lawman they would focus on if a second season is confirmed.

If season 2 happens, it will be delving into the professional and personal lives of the new protagonist, similar to season 1.
While Sheridan and Marcano have not yet mentioned who will be the hero in the second season, they can choose from numerous Western deputies, legends, and icons.
