Will Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Special be connected to Daredevil: Born Again? Details revealed

The Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale dropped on April 16, 2025, and fans are already desperate for more screen time with the show's main characters. The Disney+ series featured Marvel Netflix veterans Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal, among others, to reprise their roles from previous projects.

Disney brought back Jon Bernthal to play Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, in Born Again, and during promotion for the series, it was also confirmed that The Punisher would be starring in a solo project next year. With Daredevil: Born Again already being renewed for a second season set to premiere in 2026—and the finale makes it evident that The Punisher returns in the second season —it will be interesting to see if the storylines of the upcoming special and the show come together.

Is The Punisher special connected to Daredevil: Born Again?

During the promotional campaign for Daredevil: Born Again, it was revealed that The Punisher would be getting a special representation, which Jon Bernthal is co-writing himself. Since the Born Again finale, it is clear that Bernthal will be returning as The Punisher in Season 2 of the series, and will be reportedly reuniting with his We Own This City director, Reinaldo Marcus Green, for this untitled project. Considering the special and the show's Season 2 will overlap in their release timelines, fans have been curious about the possible connection between their storylines.

Here's what Marvel Studios' Head of TV said about the solo Punisher special:

"It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It’s so exciting."

Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays Mayor Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin on Born Again, recently sat down for a conversation with Variety. In the interview, he was asked about the possibility of more screen time in the upcoming Punisher special. D'Onofrio revealed that since the special is, as of now, a one-off thing, it remains to be seen what might happen to its plotline and if it will have any connection to the Born Again series. Since currently, there is no information about the plot, it is not possible to confirm if this special is going to explore an alternative reality. The actor stated:

"We have to see what the one-off thing that they’re planning on doing with the Punisher, that should be interesting to see. I don’t know if it’s a “What If…?” film or if it’s connected to our series or not, but it’ll be interesting to see. I love Jon’s Punisher. I think he does a great job on it."

When asked if we would see Kingpin in the Punisher one-off, D'Onofrio replied:

"If there is, nobody’s told me."

Details about the Punisher special's plot are being kept under wraps right now. However, the post-credit scene in the Daredevil: Born Again season finale revealed that The Punisher has escaped from Fisk's cage for the vigilantes, setting the stage for either his solo presentation or his appearance in Season 2.
