The latest episode of The Last of Us Season 2 brings a heartbreaking moment from the franchise game regarding Joel, played by Pedro Pascal. Yet another show where Pedro Pascal’s character is brutally killed in front of his loved ones.

However, this will not be the last time we see Joel in the post-apocalyptic HBO series, as Pascal will appear as Joel in two more episodes later in the season, which consists of seven episodes in total.

More on this in our story.

Will Joel appear in The Last of Us after Season 2 Episode 2? Details explored

In The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 titled, Through the Valley, we see Joel and Ellie in a better place after witnessing their cold and complex relationship in episode 1 of the series. In a perfectly depicted episode, we see Joel and Ellie miss each other by moments and are only able to see each other in Joel’s final moments.

In the intense and high-octane episode, Joel’s fate is sealed as he saves Abby in the mountains and is lured by her to go to a lodge rather than go back to Jackson in the blizzard. Joel reluctantly agrees and goes to the lodge, where Abby introduces him and Dina to other Fireflies, shocking them.

In the next moments, Ellie follows their footprints and sneaks into the location where Abby is torturing Joel, who is now severely injured after being shot and beaten. Even after Ellie’s cries for Joel to stand up, he couldn’t and finally succumbed to his death when Abby lodges a snapped Golf club.

However, this is still not the end of Joel in the show, as we will get to see him in two more episodes this season. In the game, Joel appears through flashback scenes. The same narrative might be followed in the HBO series, and we get to see glimpses of Joel and Ellie’s life in Jackson in the five years that they have spent there after the events of Season 1.

Although it is not yet revealed in which two episodes from the remaining five of The Last of Us Season 2, Joel will be in.

More about The Last of Us Season 2

With the episode, Abby has finally taken her revenge on Joel by brutally killing him. Joel's death was always going to be shown in the season. However, when the heartbreaking moment would take place in the show was always a point of discussion.

In a Variety interview, show creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin shared about their decision to showcase the event early in the season, just like the game, where Joel dies in the early stages. Druckman shared:

"But we also knew it needed to be early enough, because this is the inciting incident for this story. So yes, we always pick every permutation, but the later it got in the season, it just felt we were kind of dragging our feet instead of just getting to the meat of what the story is about."

Mazin also added:

"There’s a danger of tormenting people. It’s not what we want to do. If people know it’s coming, they will start to feel tormented. And people who don’t know it’s coming are going to find out it’s coming, because people are going to talk about the fact that it hasn’t shown up yet."

He continued:

"Our instinct was to make sure that when we did it, that it felt natural in the story and was not some meta-function of us wanting to upset people."
