Dexter: Resurrection is the newest series in the Dexter universe, and serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 miniseries, Dexter: New Blood, which in turn was a continuation of the original show.
A number of actors from the original show are reprising their roles in Resurrection, including Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan. However, Jennifer Carpenter, who played the lead’s adoptive sister Debra Morgan in both the previous shows, will not be returning to the franchise.
After months of speculation about her potential appearance in the new sequel, the actor has confirmed that she will not be seen in Dexter: Resurrection. Carpenter made the revelation in a recent interview.
Jennifer Carpenter will not return as Debra Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection
In an interview with People magazine, Jennifer Carpenter revealed she won’t be reprising her role as Debra Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection. The actress said while she is done with the character, she is proud of her work in the franchise:
“I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I've completed that box. I'm proud of it.”
Carpenter added that she is happy for the fans and also sent her good wishes to the people working on the new show, saying:
“I hope that they're having a wonderful time. And I'm so happy for the fans to have more to chew on.”
Carpenter played Debra Morgan in all eight seasons of Dexter, which aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013. In the series finale, she suffers a stroke and is left brain-dead after being shot. Dexter then takes her off life support and buries her body in the ocean.
In 2021, the franchise returned with the sequel miniseries Dexter: New Blood, and Carpenter reprised her role. This time, Dexter saw Debra in his visions, and she became his inner voice, replacing his adoptive father Harry Morgan, who played the same role in his life in the original show.
James Remar, who played Harry Morgan in Dexter, is now returning to play the character in Dexter: Resurrection. This hints that the forensic-expert-turned-serial-killer will once again be guided by his adoptive father’s visions, instead of his sister’s.
Meanwhile, Carpenter is gearing up for the release of 1923 Season 2, in which she plays U.S. Deputy Marshall Mamie Fossett. The show premieres on Paramount+ on February 23, 2025.
