Following the tremendous success of The Sandman season one, it was only a matter of time before the second installment of the Netflix show was greenlit and entered the production phase. Although there has been no official confirmation regarding the potential release date of season two, interest in the surreal supernatural thriller series is at an all-time high.
A recent development from the streaming platform giant has confirmed that actress Jenna Coleman will reprise her role as Johanna Constantine in the second season of The Sandman.
Jenna Coleman's Johanna Constantine is a fan-favorite character with a penchant for adventures and is often in the wrong place at the wrong time. Coleman recently spoke in an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, in which she confirmed her appearance in the upcoming season and hinted at the scale and grandeur of the sequel. She stated:
"Yeah. Yeah, I think I'm allowed to say that. I'm pretty sure I am. Well, I was seen on set actually, so yeah, I definitely am. Yeah. Yeah, I'm back in Season 2. I'd say (season two) is probably more visually stunning than it was the first year. I mean, I've done bits of ADR. What can I say without Allan Heinberg shouting at me? The scale is, I mean, it's so cinematic and so I think it's a very unique show. So yeah, everything that you loved in Season 1 is there and more for sure."
What is the latest buzz about The Sandman season 2?
The Sandman is adapted from the widely read and popular DC comics series created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Dringenberg. The first installment of the Netflix show consisted of eleven episodes. It was adapted from the first two narrative arcs of the comics, namely Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll's House, along with elements from the third narrative arc, Dream Country.
The character of Morpheus played a prominent part in the narrative of the debut season. The debut season had been in development for quite a while before it made its way to Netflix, and as a testament to the hard work of the cast and crew, the show became an instant hit and reigned on the streamer's Top 10.
The second season of The Sandman is supposed to be adapted from the source material's fourth story arc, Season of Mists, in which Lucifer will hand over the control of hell to Morpheus. This would, in turn, set in motion events, leading many mortals to fling themselves at Morpheus so that he could turn the key to them.
Showrunner opens up about writing The Sandman
Allan Heinberg is the writer and showrunner of The Sandman and an industry veteran. Speaking with Creative Screenwriting in an interview from 2022, Heinberg opened up about the show's genesis. He revealed:
"David S. Goyer and I went to Neil’s (Gaiman) house in Woodstock for two days. We got right to work. We discussed a broad overview of material for season 1. Breaking down the first episode, we talked about how do you get an audience to fall in love with a character who’s naked, in a cage, and doesn’t speak? We discussed dramatizing the span of 100 years and the sleeping sickness. We knew we had to have balance in the story, revealing Dream progressively like in the comic."
The Sandman season one is available exclusively on Netflix.
