Fan-favorite teen drama Heartstopper is almost here with its third season on Netflix. The series has enjoyed remarkable success and topped the charts during its first three weeks. Adapted from Alice Oseman's best-selling books, season 3 will follow the story from her fourth and fifth volumes.
Oseman is currently working on her last volume for the novella and is hopeful about the renewal of the show for its fourth season. Netflix hasn't green-lit Heartstopper for season 4 yet, but there's a strong chance of renewal as the author will conclude Nick and Charlie's story in the sixth book.
The third installment is taking place in Paris as the students of Truham Grammar School enjoy an international trip. As seen in the trailer, Charlie and Nick continue their new relationship, while facing notable challenges. Other characters including Tao, Elle, and Isaac will also experience character development in the season.
Alice Oseman's plan to conclude Heartstopper with season 4
Though it hasn't been confirmed if Netflix will renew the series for season 4, Alice Oseman has hoped for the show to have its final season, adapted from her sixth graphic novel. The author mentioned working on the last book and considering working on season 4 scripts. According to her Patreon page, Oseman shared:
"If we get a fourth season of the show, it will use volume 6 of Heartstopper and the Nick and Charlie novella as the source material."
The author continued:
"I will most likely be drawing Vol 6 simultaneously while writing the season 4 scripts, even if we haven’t been renewed."
Oseman aims to complete her book before season 4 comes out. She has worked as the Netflix series' showrunner and penned down the scripts for the live-action adaptation for all three seasons.
How will the author end Charlie and Nick's story for the Heartstopper book series?
While the upcoming season will take viewers to Paris, Oseman is afraid her last book won't include any international trips for the students. The author wants fans to read the last book before enjoying a potential Heartstopper Season 4.
However, the ending will ignore action-packed and grand events, rather it will focus more on the personal growth of the characters as they leave school.
Alice Oseman also mentioned excluding any villainous character in her sixth graphic novel on her Patreon page and wrote:
"I’m scared about this volume not having a big new villain or a big adventure like the Paris trip, because I know there will be people who read it and be like ‘huh that was boring. nothing happened'."
Oseman talked about the reception of the fifth book, as many readers seem to dislike the narrative. However, the Netflix series has a huge fanbase, and are hoping for the show's renewal.
Heartstopper focuses on Nick and Charlie's teenage love, which continues to grow as the two reveal their feelings. The series also sheds light on the pressure and anxiety teenagers experience while growing up.
Joe Locke hinted at Heartstooper Season 4 on his X account
Joe Locke, who plays Charlie Spring in the series shared a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account while filming Heartstopper Season 3, with a caption "Bye for now Charlie warlie x", hinting that there's more to explore about the titular characters' lives.
Fans were quick to take this as a tease for season 4 and expressed anticipation for one more season to end the story. The third installment will see Charlie and Nick evolving into young adults, and making mature decisions about their lives.
The trailer featured Nick expressing his feelings, while Charlie has something important to share. The summer has finally come to an end, and the students will head back to school.
Heartstopper Season 3 is arriving on Netflix on October 3, 2024.
