The Last Of Us is returning to the television screens after a long wait of two years. The second season of the series, based on the massively popular eponymous video game, is set to premiere on HBO in April 2025.
Like the game, the show is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a fungal infection is turning people into zombie-like creatures. Amid the chaos, a smuggler is tasked with moving a teenage girl to safety.
Considering the popularity of the show, fans are wondering if it will continue past the second season. While HBO has yet to renew The Last Of Us for a third season, series creators have hinted they are interested in making more than three installments.
The Last Of Us creators hint the show could have more than three seasons
The Last Of Us creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, had an interview with Entertainment Weekly on February 3, 2025, where they opened up about the future of post-apocalyptic drama. Mazin revealed that there is a high possibility they would need more than three seasons to tell the complete story:
“I think it's pretty likely that our story will extend past a season 3. How far past? I can't say. And that's not to say that there are not other stories that could be told, but this story is the one that Neil and I are telling.”
Druckmann, who is also the co-director of the video game on which the show is based, added that they already have a plan for the show’s future but can not confirm at the moment how many seasons or episodes the series would have:
“We have a plan. We know what we need to do going forward, but we couldn't tell you right now exactly how many episodes or how many seasons it would take to get there.”
Hence, the creators are willing to make at least four seasons of The Last of Us, but the decision ultimately lies with HBO. The network has so far renewed the series for only a second and third season.
Though it is possible that HBO would want to continue the show, considering its brand value and viewership, we need to wait for an official announcement from the network about the series’ future.
The makers plan to adapt The Last Of Us Part II across multiple seasons
There are only two The Last Of Us games so far. The HBO series' first season adapted the entire first game. However, the second part of the game is much more vast with multiple plot points.
The creators had earlier revealed season 2 would be based on a portion of the second game, as it is not possible to adapt the complete game in a few episodes. Meanwhile, Neil Druckmann has also confirmed that a third part of the video game franchise is in development.
Hence, the show's creators have enough source material to adapt for future seasons but are awaiting renewal confirmation from HBO. The Last of Us premiered in January 2023 and became the most-watched debut season in the history of HBO.
The second season is set five years after the first and continues the story of Ellie and Joel. Ellie wants to avenge her father’s murder from Abby and heads to Seattle for her mission.
Season 2 stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Spencer Lord as Owen, Jeffrey Wright as Issac, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, and Ariela Barer as Mel.
The Last of Us season 1 is currently streaming on Max.
